7 Quick Takes

28 June 2013

Linking up with Jen!

1. I don't know what made me think I wouldn't but I really regret cutting my hair. I always, always do and I never haven't so ..... why did I do it? Dumb. So I'm downing Biotin and I've already had to clip my nails 3 times in the past 4 days (I don't like a sliver of white to show ... I don't know) so hopefully it's doing the same for my locks of bleh.

2. Not like I'm any sort of dinner making maven but it's really hard to know if Simon is even going to home at a reasonable hour to eat dinner let alone when he'll finally get out of work on this rotation so of course ... I usually just don't ... convenient for all. Baking requires no timeline or reheating or wilted salading so that's what I've been doing this week. This cake -- Wacky Cake. It's so good and egg free (I don't care about that but I know some people have to steer clear of the hen droppings) and virtually impossible to screw up. And I make this frosting (icing?) (um, make 1/4 that amount) and it's a great little marriage in your mouth. AND - if you have any easy bake recs that won't kill me if Bash and J "help" .... throw them at me. Please.

3. Simon and I were talking about my crush on Emma Stone the other night and I don't know how it came up but it did ... Jen vs. Angelina. Let me make it known that I am solidly on Team Jen. I would probably scare her with my crystal clear recollections of several of her interviews. I know that she is a self-proclaimed "creature of habit" and ate a Cobb salad every day that she was on the set of Friends. I cheered when she said that Brad was missing a sensitivity chip. I know that her guilty pleasure is a margarita with chips and guacamole. And I had a very Rachelesque haircut back in the day that was a huge insult to her stylist. I love all things Aniston. However, when it comes to bombshell factor I have to give it to smug old Ang. Simon strongly disagrees and I strongly disagreed right back. Am I alone in this oxymoronic camp?

(Jen is still a bombshell but Ang ... she's in a higher cutegory)

4. I have yet to finish this week's episode of the Bachelorette (how you KNOW it's a terrible season because I have waited up until it goes live on Hulu ... don't test my allegiance) but I read the very beginning of Ashley's recap and as always ... she's outdone even herself. Incredible.

5. I don't really know what went down with Theo and Simon last night but this morning when I went to get Theo up he was rocking a size 18 mos outfit and was swaddled in one of Simon's scrub tops and there were diapers flung alllllllll over the attic.

Excuse the grain. And it's actually size 24 mos - just checked. Sebastian grew out of this when he was 9 months old - I believe.

Hopefully I'm awake when Simon gets home tonight and he can give a little recap if he wasn't sleep caretaking which isn't out of the realm of possibility. {Oh!! And Hallie told me about Melatonin which has seemed to help my insomnia ... bless her.}

6. I bought kettlecorn and kale chips at Trader Josephs this morning and I'll let you take a wild guess which bag I'm killing right now. Fine! A hint: You crazy herbivores that eat kale even after it's been dressed and lemon juiced and salted and whatevered --- I do not understand you.

7. Bleh. The weekend. Everyone's like "it's the weekend!" and I'm like "t-g-i-eff-this" more of the same but less sleep and even lesser Simon around. Martyr forever.

Have a decent one.

  1. Ha! I just laughed out loud at number 7.

  2. Wacky Cake was my absolute fav when I was little. I probably forced my mum to make it more times than she likes to remember.

And I'm totally with you on the nails thing. I can't function if there's any white. This drives my friends with their long elegant manicured nails up the wall.

  3. Haha - thanks for a wonderful end o Friday laugh. I feel your tiredness though my husband is just attempting grad school research in the evenings rather than rotations.

Pretty sure if KettleCorn is from TJs you can count it as a healthy snack. Just sayin'. ;)

  4. I seriously believe that having an urge to cut your hair is a post partum hormonal thing! I didit after having both my kids and totally regret it!

  5. Hen droppings... Bahaha

I just recently got into friends (since I was 5 when it first came on...) so I love Jen and even when they broke up and I was just a kid (I think 15?) I was heartbroken for her and thought Ang was a total home wrecker. I have just never liked her. And the fact that you had the Rachel cut makes me laugh. Pictures?

  6. I love Biotin! When recommending it to my lady friends I always preface it with the warning that yes, the hair on your head will grow fast, long, and luxuriously. BUT...so will the hair on the rest of your body. Be mindful of trimming/shaving as needed. Ahem. Too much? I feel like Camp Patton is also the Trust Tree so I hope I don't offend. But, out of control body hair can also be offensive. Just sayin'.

  7. I sure do love you. Total agreement on #7.

  8. Egg droppings and husbandlessness, I join you in both this weekend... Solidarity!

  9. The kids helped me make those flourless peanut butter cookies - 1 cup pb, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 350 for 10 min and they can decorate with sprinkles. So easy!

And kale is gross. But I made bacon-braised kale and it was actually pretty good, so that's worth a try if someone gives you pounds and pounds of kale...

Also, the twins JUST outgrew some of their 6 month clothes. Theo could probably eat both of them as a light snack.

  10. Whacky cake was the very first cake I learned how to make! I'm pretty sure I earned my Bakers Badge in Brownies with that one. Mmm!

  11. I'm already watching 3 of my nieces and nephews tonight. You should just bring your kids over and go have yourself a night on the town.

  12. Ang is hot in the "I will steal your husband if we film a movie together" kind of way. Maybe it's just me but I think Brad with Jen made him more attractive. Now that he's with Angelina I don't find him cute at all. Things I obviously think too much about....

    1. I'm with ya - and I love that your name is Jennifer. :)

    2. Yes! I agree about Brad not being as hot! Did you notice that happened with Ben Affleck, too, when he was with jLo? He was gorgeous, and then the longer he dated her, the yuckier he got!

  13. Team Jen! Ang is probs more red-carpet-sexy but Jen is gorgeous and much more loveable.

Wacky cake is one of my true loves. If you swap the water in the recipe for coffee, it will change your life. Trust me!

  14. You are a gem! Clever on that numero 7 there. And I'm a little Jen-obsessed too and am not not NOT a fan of Angelina - at all, whatsoever. So Jen wins every round of everything. Hope your weekend goes better than you think it will! xoxo

  15. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is complaining about my short hair this week. Except you are still cute and mine is waaaaayyyyy shorter and muy ugly. Does biotin really work? If so, I'm about to OD.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tj's kettle corn is the bomb biggity.. Also I will never cut my hair short again.. It's always terrible on me and I don't care if I'm the lady with a walker and inappropriately long highlighted hair in my 80s.. I won't go short!

  17. Same here with the Friday...doesn't matter, my drh is working all weekend and it's me and my three...but he gets upset if there isn't some kind of dinner food in the fridge for him. I hate cooking...
    I agree on #3.

  18. Have had my hair long for a good year now and have very recently been considering cutting it shorter in an attempt to avoid the sweaty neck. Thanks for talking me out of it! I know I would regret it. Viva la Biotin!

  19. "t-g-i-eff-this" ....you win at life. The end.

  20. Did you cut your hair again or are you referring to the trim you gave yourself a few weeks ago? Because if you cut it again, we need pictures. If it's the trim, I thought that looked great!

Team Jen all the way! I was actually depressed (just a little, but still) when Brad left her.

  21. I can't imagine med school. You're getting time off of PUrgatory you know... :)

  22. We made the same cake growing up! But we called it Screwball Chocolate Cake. I had some weird dairy-and-egg-free-by-choice friends in high school, but it was nice to be able to make them something. We usually just put powdered sugar over it, but that frosting looks good! I'm glad the great depression came out with something good, even if it is cake!

  23. Though I'm not an Angelina fan, I've never liked Jen. Sorry. So it's a lose lose for me.

    1. Team Jen all the way! I never watched Friends much, and I"m not sure any movie she's been in has been that great . . . except office space. But she's just likable.

  24. I'm with you on the Jen/Angelina issue. I love Jennifer Aniston, but Angelina the a bombshell. As I say to my boys when we are discussing beautiful women, "I'm a girl and I think she's hot!" Not that we do that or anything around these parts. Jen seems more approachable and "girlfriend-ish". Plus, Friends is one of my all time favorite shows. The one where she and Ross finally get together? Swoon. I'm trying the cake recipe. My people never turn down anything with chocolate.

  25. Yes on the short nails...long nails are germ-infested grossness (IMHO). Hope this weekend is bearable & quick!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Theo looks adorable in his oversized onesie! Also, we make that frosting minus the butter and in much smaller amounts and slather it on graham crackers. If you let them set for a little bit they get a little soft, I don't know why that helps but they are so yummy!!

  27. Am I the only one who doesn't find Angelina attractive? Her lips sort of creep me out. I guess she is more "exotic" looking but I think Jen is way way prettier, maybe in more of a "girl next door" way. I've always thought she was gorgeous.

I have a really easy chocolate chip banana bread recipe that always turns out well. You make it all in one bowl too so it doesn't take much clean up (although... with Bash and Julia, it could get a LOT messier!) I'll see if I can post it on here a little later.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Okay... banana bread:

    Ingredients:
3-4 ripe bananas, peeled and mashed
    3/4 cup of sugar
    1 egg
    1 1/2 cups of flour
    1/4 cup of melted butter
    1 tsp. of baking soda
    3/4 tsp. of salt
3/4 cup of chocolate chips (or however many you want!)

    Instructions:
Add all of the ingredients to one bowl and stir until just combined. Bake in a greased loaf pan at 350 degrees for one hour or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Can also be made as muffins instead of a loaf. Just don't overbake!

  29. Jen is way prettier. Angelina looks.....strange.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jen is gorgeous and probably prettier but Angelina (now--she didn't use to) has that aloof wow factor..so yes, I agree with you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Totally agree on the hair cutting thing...I think yours looks great, but I am forever the person barely out the salon door when I'm already regretting cutting it! Not sure why I keep doing it to myself. Wacky cake looks super simple; bet my non-baking self might even be able to navigate it. And completely hear you on the Bachelorette! I halfheartedly got through this weeks episode by this morning and ran straight over to Jonesy....

  32. Aaron's been informed that if I EVER start hair-cut talk that he is to tackle me or tie me up or whatever it takes to keep me from cutting it. It always sounds like a good idea and then I cut it and I'm like WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. And then I drown myself in biotin. Which makes me break out like crazy. And then I have shorter hair AND awful skin and I hate life.

I know she's kind of crazy town buuuut I'm firmly team Angie. When she became a single mom by adopting a kid from Cambodia? I was sold. Plus the crazy bombshell factor.

  33. t-g-i-eff-this...so awesome. with a deployed hubby i feel the same way...in fact i get excited when it's sunday night and we've made it through another weekend and don't have to worry about trying to make it any different than any other old weekday.
And I'm on team Jen for sure. Although I do know exactly what you mean about Angelina...she is super hot.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agree. Angie is way more "bombshell" but also seems way more shallow. I remember back in the day being surprised that Brad Pitt was married to Jen. Angelina just seems to fit him better. Hope you are having a decent weekend. I have to admit, today was the worst of the worst days I have ever had with my children. Matt worked all day and is still at work and NO ONE, NO ONE, would listen to me.

  35. I mix up my dry ingredients into ziplocs and measure out several batches, one into each bag. (I guess if I were more aware and loved the earth I'd put them into clean peanut butter jars or something... oh well.) The ennui factor in baking for me is always the getting out and putting away of things and the finding of the little spoons.

    Herewith, the basic muffin:

    2 cups flour
    1 TBS baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 cup sugar

Throw all that into a bag/jar.

Then when its time to bake you melt some butter (about 6 TBS or 3/4 of a stick), crack an egg, and then add about 3/4 to a cup of milk and stir it all up. For flavoring you can throw in some vanilla, spices, fruit, or drop a tsp of jam into the cups as you fill them. Drop into a greased muffin tin and bake for 20 mins or so at 375.

When your kids get a little older they can help you count spoonfuls as you measure the bags. As toddlers I let them choose the next muffin cup to get batter. Little dictators!

  36. Chase takes melatonin for his migraines and his bad sleeping too!

  37. i cut my hair this week as well and am totally regretting the lost of length. why do i keep cutting my hair when i want it to grow out? blerg.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Theo's hair is looking a little Dwight Schrute-esque and I love it. And his crabby shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Now, is it wacky because there are no eggs? I mean, in my cray life, that would be wacky.

And Biotin. Any side effects? Safe while nursing?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Late to the party, but Angelina is angelic looking . .. in that scary sort of way that makes you know angels are really alien life forms and not just uplifted humans with wings. Scary pretty, like those cheekbones and lips were sculpted. And I adore her and would totally be after her if I were a guy.

Also, it's zucchini bread season. I just use good old Betty Crocker's recipe. All my fancy cookbooks are pristine but my Betty Crocker book looks like it's been through hell.

    ReplyDelete
  41. So I used to think Angelina was hotter, but my husband told me he's not attracted to her at all and that she is actually kind of manly looking which is why women think she's hot. And now I see it. Jen is way more naturally beautiful and will be gorgeous when she is old. I can see Ang looking worse as she ages. This is so shallow, ha.
