7 Quick Takes

22 June 2012

I told myself that I would not saturate the takes with talk/complaints of Simon working nights this week but I have a feeling I'm going to fail. You might just want to skip and move onward to a more fun blog.

1. By the time this post drops, we'll be mere hours away from our last night of the absolute hell that is night float until September. How we weathered an entire month of this nonsense in January with 2-month-old no-sleep-ever Sebastian was an insane miracle because this week with two decent sleepers was embarrassingly treacherous.  Hopefully one of these days I'll learn to not be so hyper paranoid about possible intruders (I'm well aware that I am completely insane, thanks) but until then I'll continue staying up until 5 when the sun rises and I feel somewhat safe to drift off next to our block of kitchen knives only to be sweetly awakened by the chirp-a-doodling of a little boy wanting his first breakfast of the day before he settles back in for a power nap to ready himself for his second breakfast an hour later.  If you were the unlucky recipient of any email or communication from me this week, especially sent between the hours of midnight and 5am, I'm sorry for the rambles. Just destroy and forget. Many thanks.

2. (Nope, she's not stopping there!) I knew I had hit the point of crazylady on no sleep when I took the kids to the grocery store to pick up a prescription that was supposed to be ready a few days earlier. When the pharmacist informed me for the second day in a row that she didn't have the medicine in stock but that I "was welcome to try back again tomorrow" (for a third! time) I don't remember exactly what demon of pathetic came over me or what I said exactly but it was something along the calm and rational lines of how tough it is getting three people dressed (myself included -- laugh out loud) to come out in public (gasp) to the tune of valiantly fighting back tears of frustration. Oh, yes. A new and embarrassing low. She blinked a few times and said I could pay $98.00 for the name brand meds and I'm pretty sure my little cart riders are still suffering the effects of grocery cart whiplash from my quick and mortifying turn and exit. Hopefully you're feeling much better about yourself now as I only aim to please.

3. Needless to say, we're all very happy that this week is coming to a merciful end.
You see? giddy with excitement.

4. Did you watch the Bachelorette this week? SPOILER ALERT!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DIDN'T WATCH (Hallie). It was by far my favorite episode (not a difficult feat, as we all know) because Emily sent Ryan the Arrogant Bottom home and of course what was there not to love about the most dramatic rose ceremony ever? Nothing. I ate it up. And next week promises to be even juicier with the Arie (total frontrunner) d-r-a-m-a.

5. On the other end of the quality programming spectrum, did you see that Anne of Green Gables is going to be made into a TV series? The tortuous producers are going to make us wait until 2014 which is basically an eternity away but we have Downton in 2013 to keep us happy in the mean time.

6. More TV talk. Forgive me. Or don't. To keep me company at night I've been watching a lot of Felicity. I don't love it but it promises to never ever be scary and has every single episode on Netflix which is probably about 90 million minutes total -- new material for years. Am I going to have to watch the whole series to see if she ends up with Ben (please) or Noel (no!)? And will her hair ever grow back out? I hope so.

7. I saved the best for last. Jessica so kindly dedicated a whole post to two great recipes for yesterday's linkup. Check them out and thank her for her kind dedication to the 'stop feeding the family three daily squares of noodles and graham crackers' cause.

*bonus round* (sponsored by Julia's future mortification): someone got out of her bath tonight, purposefully grabbed three books, went to her potty-mini, read her books and did her business (yes -- business of the second variety) tonight even though (don't worry!) I am not even thinking about potty training her. I think I scared her with my freak out and I guarantee that my little prodigy won't be doing that again for several more years.

Go see Jen for takes that are actually quick and interesting.

  1. Whoa... Felicity. That was a flashback. Thanks for the ride down reminiscent lane.

If it makes you feel better, I enjoyed your Quick Takes. :)

  2. Aaah! I would be freaking out about the pottying too! Only...that is the horror of the potty training which you are not actually doing...she will not do that again for at least 3 months.

  3. I think night float is the pits... and I don't even have any kids. Hang in there!

And a tv Anne of Green Gables?! I recently heard of the movie musical Les Miserables in production too - new versions of two of my favorite things from childhood to look forward to as I head toward 30. HA.

  4. I hope you are fiercely and utterly sleeping right now. Then I hope when you wake up, it will be to coffee and a full bottle of almond joy creamer.

Also, I hope that one day Simon delivers not a baby, but a giant pot o' gold that the baffled mother then gifts to the Patton family so Simon can pay off any future bosses so no more night shifts ever have to occur.

"Hello, Mrs. Leprechaun. It's a bouncing baby pot o' gold!"

  5. You are a SAINT for not complaining about it this past month, seriously, a saint. I would have filled the interwebs with my wailing and gnashing of teeth so that everyone knew about it. I had no idea it had been so hard, but I have totally been thinking and praying for you lots.
We started watching Scrubs last night and all I could think of was Simon, that's kind of weird, I know. I obviously don't know many people in the medical profession.

  6. I can't sleep at all if Phil isn't home at night - so I understand completely! Maybe drink some more before bed next time ;) And way to go Julia!!! Seriously, going #2 in the potty required some serious bribing and tears around here.

  7. Ahhh Felicity... my favorite show as a 9th grader... and the reason I chose Felicity as my patron saint (though I was adamant at the time that it WASN'T the reason lol!).

  8. 1. if i saw you, i'd hug you at your equal frustration over whether felicity ends up with ben or noel. i was forced to rewatch all of ht episodes/seasons since we caught up with how i met your mother and i think there could be an entire blog devoted to the drama's of felicity and her small-lipped tiny face. ben! all the way. noel is frump.
    2. i yelled at an appointment making lady last week because she was being a b about changing mowgli's apt, i'll probably post about it, but i feel you. i was exhausted and pissed and, after, humiliated. you did the right thing, hoisting that cart around to make a point. pharm-lady deserved it, and s and j's whiplash was a small price to pay.
    3. simon's work schedule sounds gawd-awful, and you're a good person for complaining about it. it helps us all to realize how mad we are at our husbands for working so hard too. in fact, i'm calling mine right now to berate him.
    4. i can't stand noel.
    5. i don't know what it is about ben.

  9. I almost died when John was gone for 3 nights. I thought I would never sleep again or be murdered in my sleep. To top it off, in my crazy I actually left my keys in the door.

  10. I'm so depressed. I THOUGHT downtown was coming back on in September of THIS year. WHAT?!? How will I get through it? I should be ashamed at how many times I've watched Felicity all the way through, but I'm not. If you need me to bring any to you when I come, just say yay. Also, you simultaneously broke and then made my day when you mentioned Anne of Green Gables!!!!!!! My mom said, had she known what a big deal the spelling is, she would have named me Anne. Ah well, rebel.

  11. A whole quick take just for me? Muchas Gracias!
Bonus good news: Costco sells boneless butt roasts. But only in a 2 pack, so more freezer space, or get it somewhere else.
The news about the Anne of Green Gables tv show just made my day!

  12. I'm so excited for Anne of Green Gables! I can't believe it's going to take so long though.

When Ryan and I were newlyweds (NEW newlyweds mind you, in our very first month of marriage), I worked M-F 8:30 am to 5 pm. He worked M-F 4:30 pm to 1:30 am. He was always last guy on the totem pole so even though we were supposed to have weekends together, he often got called into work. So I totally here you on the miserableness of night float. It slowly got better and about 4 months later our schedules were finally not as horrible.

  13. Did you read that Anne of Green Gables article? They are talking about "re-imagining" her! I don't want her re-imagined! I love her just how she is!

  14. I may have to stop reading your blog. Ben- really?!?
I watched all of Felicity when I was pregnant, because I had too much time on my hands and I never saw the show when it first came out (probably because it was on cable?)

Anyway, I was rooting for Noel the. entire. time. Without exception. Maybe it's his coy geekiness and floppy hair. Oh, btw- did you know the actor was married to Jennifer Gardner before her Affleck days?

    1. ha! We'll just have to agree to disagree. Noel drives me nuts.

And ohhh yes I knew about Garner. I didn't know that she was on that show until I watched it -- what a weird character she played.

    2. Yeah, I won't spoil it, but she may or may not appear again...and it may or may not be even weirder.

Speaking of not-spoiling, the ending of the series is super-strange. I heard it was because the show ended, then the WB insisted on like six more episodes. However, I say persevere. It's good mind candy.

  15. I LOVE that you watch the Bachelorette! I give Emily so much credit for not giving into Ryan's attempts to change her mind...who does he think he is?! Ugh. And while Arie is definitely a hunk, my fav is Sean...I just love him. So actually, hopefully he'll get booted off so he can marry me ;)

  16. Felicity is the reason I still to this day don't really like Jennifer Gardner. Don't know if I will ever recover from that one.

I'm curious to see what you think about how the series ends. I don't want to give anything away so we will wait and see...

  17. Haha oh Felicity...I won't tell you how old I was when I watched that show devotedly, but it was probably too young. But good times!

And I went into a minor clinical depression when my husband worked 11 days in a row, and I had to put the progeny to bed TWICE by myself. So its not laughing matter having to deal with kids all night!

  18. Great news about Anne of Green Gables! I love her and now my 3 year old s on does too! I hear you on being left alone with the kiddos. DH went to El Salvador for 5 days over Mother's Day weekend...and left me home, 6 months pregnant, with a broken toe and a leaky roof and a whiny 3 year old. Yes, I too am sometimes surprised we are still married. New joy - he leaves in a few days for India for a week. Leaving me home with the 3 year old, 8.5 months pregnant and I work full time so I am super exhausted. Prayers headed your way!

  19. I LOVE Felicity, and am glad to know there are so many addicts out there. I can't tell you how many times I've had to stop getting ready for work in the morning to watch the end of an episode from the night before.

I think your link to Jen's blog at the end of this post is mis-linked? It's taking me to some strange, anti-NFP post...

I was wondering if Grace's readers would think that maybe I was just taking Conversion Diary in a whole new direction.

  20. Doesn't Arie creep you out in a kind of effeminate, long-fingered vampire sort of way? No? Only me?

    Team Sean.

  21. Little bit torn about the Anne of Green Gables series. I actually never read the books (for shame!) but my family was all about the movies--no kidding, it's a regular thing to hear lines being quoted. I'm not sure I could get over a new "Anne." I'll check it out either way. If someone reminds me when the time comes because I sure as heck won't remember.

Super impressive that Julia did her business!

  22. I LOVE Felicity. Major fan...and I can't really explain why. Maybe for the same reasons you listed....although...when I watched it in college, I was a total Noel fan. I know...

As for Anne of Green Gables...love, love, love.

    Love.

  23. $98 for meds!! Eeek!!! No wonder you made a hasty exit!! I have an embarrassing pharmacy moment approaching in a few days when I have to order more cardiac meds for my toddler A MONTH too early and own up that the reason is that she took them all in one go resulting in a rush to ER and 2 days in hospital!! Maybe he'll put them in a child proof bottle?!

  24. I know have no idea how you do it. Wow. Hoping you get a break soon.

  25. number 6 spoke to me. my husband works nights, too and i've found felicity's voice to be the only thing to calm me at night. that and the intro music.

  26. Yay for Anne of Green Gables! I'm a little worried about the whole "re-imagining" thing though.
    Um...spontaneous pottying?? AWESOME!!
Hope you guys can get some rest now!

  30. You aren't the only one that freaks out about possible intruders! When my husband first started going away on business trips it was awful, but I've gotten better with time.
