hey hey you you

03 November 2017

I don't like your ... no. I'm sure I'd love your girlfriend -- just wanted to pop back into blogging with a splash - hence that super splashy post title.

Splash.

1. We've been traveling like well, travelers lately and it's really salted my blogging game because as anyone that has um traveled knows - laundry seems to multiply by the zillion when traveling and how many times can I work the word, "travel" into this run-on? Not many. Anyway, I'd love to dedicate a post to each and every one of our trips but luck is on your side and we've got even more trips on the immediate horizon and realism has always been a favorite of mine so here, have a photo I snapped right before my little brother's wedding.

The five oldest kids were in the wedding and about 3 hours into our 12 hour drive up to Mississippi where said wedding would take place I made the horrifying realization that I had left all of their wedding garb in the closet where I'd put it so, "we wouldn't forget it" -- thankfully a friend was able to overnight it for a small/large fortune but my heart is recovering from the nearattack it suffered.

2. What else ... what else? This kid.

I probably think this with every child and have blogged it several times before but I really think he's one of the happiest babies ever. For now, at least. Phoebe is obsessed with him and I spend a lot of my days pulling her off/away from him for fear she'll smother him with her aggressive affection.

3. Moving right along. Because Simon is in his third and final (!!!!!!!!) year of fellowship he's started interviewing for real live attending jobs. He's officially finished at the end of June, takes yet another round of boards, and then off we trot to our yet to be determined new location. We'd love to stay here but there just aren't any jobs in his field (something might pop up, but it's not likely - sadly) so it looks like we'll be headed north and hopefully closer to family in the midwest. The kids are thrilled (they really want to see snow - the apples fall VERY far from the mother tree on the weather front) and Simon and I are excited to start "real life" (I mean - you know) and be done with the eternal training aspect of medicine. I'll keep you posted - as you know I always do.

4. Let's talk shows of the tv variety! A few people have told me that they thought I'd love Riverdale but then a few other people said it was awful so I started watching it. And I don't hate it. Simon even indulged in an episode with me last night and aside from his need to Google up a storm about the original comic - he didn't say he didn't enjoy it. I'm waiting patiently for the Bachelor and while I wish Peter were the bachelor - I'll still be ready and waiting with bells on come January 1st. Any new shows you're loving? Oh! We've been watching The Good Doctor and really enjoying it. I know I'm the worst but while I like This is Us - I'm not a fanatic (ducks to avoid rotten eggs) and haven't kept up this season.

5. I've been reading mediocre book after mediocre book and am officially in a book RUT. Any recommendations are welcome with open and admittedly picky arms. One book I AM very much looking forward to is Jen Fulwiler's new one coming out next year. I'm happy to wait, if impatiently so. She was in town last month and we got to hit the town for dinner and drinks and now I'm feeling like I already blogged about this but it was a blast and we stayed out way too late (no regrets, ever).

6. Can I be rill annoying (please tell me you listen to Kaitlyn's podcast and love her "ken you not?!" segment?) and ask for your Facebook like/appreciation? I guess I can and I am. I'm planning a fun and worthwhile giveaway if/when the Camp reaches 10k fans (likes?) ... woo to the HOO.

7. Alright, since we are in for a bit of a colder November and December on the travel front I've been eying some colder weather friendly duds. Wading through the dozens of cute ankle boot options - I think I like these best but haven't pulled the trigger, yet. I did buy two of these for layering/wearing on the daily and highly recommend them.

And that's that! It's overwhelming thinking of all the things I could and would love to blog about and I'll do my best to put fingertips to keyboard asap. Occasional Blogger's Honor.

Linking up with Kelly!

  1. I just binge watched The Good Place and am totally hooked! My husband and I watched a few episodes last year and didn't really get into it at first, but on (constant! Never ending!) recommendation from a friend I gave it a go again. Love it! Kirsten Bell is hilarious, but the rest of the cast is equally great (especially as the season goes on).

  2. All of these books got me out of book ruts at various times this year:
    - Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan (YA but SO engrossing - a story of a harmonica that connects three children, one in Germany, on in Pennsylvania, and one in California)
    - Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (following the lives/generations of two half-sisters born in Ghana)
    - The Futures by Anna Pitoniak (about a young couple fresh out of college in NYC)
    - I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifrenka and Martin Martin Ganda (another YA - tells the true story of middle school pen pals from the US and Africa and how they impact one another's lives. Not the best writing but really hard to put down, and made me cry several times)

    Good luck :)

Kitchen House - if you haven't read it yet.... It took a chapter or two to get in, but then I couldn't put it down or stop thinking about it long afterwards!

  5. I have an hour+ commute each way to work so I listen to a lot of books! Ones I’ve lived recently:

The Good Girl and Don’t You Cry by Mary Kubica

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

My (not so) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

For funn British chick lit Paige Toon is a GODDESS and she’s a must read for me...I will read anything she writes. She makes me cry from laughing.

Along the same lines Jill Mansell is wonderful.

  6. I'm super late to the game but I'm reading Into the Water and like it (same author as Girl on the train). We finished Ozark on Netflix and liked it, too. Looking forward to the next season. I've actually gotten back into This Is Us after taking a hiatus, which is sort of surprising for me. I think I just like forcing the kids to bed earlier on Tuesdays. haah. Just kidding. I did just see Bad Moms 2 last night and was just as hilariously awful as the first one. I laughed hard and my eyeballs rolled out of my head but it was worth it.

  8. I feel the same way about “This is Us” - on paper I should love it. I’ve watched and rewatched Parenthood which is technically the same, I watched Brothers and Sisters back in the day but I couldn’t bring myself to watch past episode 1 of this season of This is Us. I don’t get it.

I started binging The Good Wife (free on Amazon Prime & Hulu) when I was postpartum and just binged the last three seasons and finished the series. I loved it more the longer I watched! And now, I wait till January for Bach to begin again....

    If I Was Your Girl
Holding Up the Universe (YA genre)
    Everything I Never Told You

  11. Okay not sure what it is you’re picky about with books so this one might not make your cut, but the best book i’ve read all year (and in recent years actually) was A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. It’s long(ish) and deep and sad and sometimes hard to read (not becuase it’s poorly written, but because i was so emotionally attached to the characters and they would go through hard things) but i just adddooored it! The writing and characters and journey and story were wonderful. Hope you read it!!

  12. I quickly read through all the Susanna Kearsley books our library had. Now i'm 2/3 of the way through Almost Missed You by Jessica Strawser - I really like it so far, but hate to recommend it until I get to the ending!

  13. On the moving front - Atlanta is closer to the midwest than Tampa. And NOT too cold. Just saying....! :)

  14. I just finished A Man Called Ove and Little Fires Everywhere. I recommended a man callled ove to my dad and he loved it and now my mom is reading it. I’m about to start the uncommon type by Tom Hanks. We shall see how it is!

  15. Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng. So good. I listened to it and didn't love the reader this time but I enjoyed the story so much I added myself to the LONG holds list at the library for the actual book so that I can read it myself.

  16. I just binged watched The Good Place in the hospital and loved it. And I still think you would like my novel The Wideness of the Sea but I admit to being biased (the almost 200 Amazon reviews however are bias free!). But also looking forward to Jen Fulweilers book too!

  17. Yay for a return! I don't have a book recommendation but just....solidarity. My nearly 5 year old gets lovingly referred to as "Elmira"--from Looney Toons--by my husband. We have to rescue younger siblings from her, otherwise, "I'm going to love you and squeeze you and never ever let go!" I am mentally aiming not to forget wedding party dresses in a closet next November when my 5 are in my sister's wedding!

  18. I loved The Rules of Civility by Amor Towles is beautiful, and I also really enjoyed The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry.

I also feel kind of meh about the whole This Is Us phenomenon... but I love Life in Pieces, it's one of the only funny shows I've found recently :)

  19. If you are up for a good, easy read, nonfiction, I'm really liking How to be married by Jo Piazza. She looks into marriage as it exists in different cultures all over the world.

  20. Read How to Kill a Rock star and God-Shaped Hole by Tiffanie Debartolo. You won't be disappointed. Promise.

  22. Loving the Storied Life of AJ Fikry. I just had #6, so perfect for postpartum mom-brain. Not too deep. :)

  25. Two books I've read lately and absolutely loved - The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman (it's the new prequel to Practical Magic, which I hadn't read but am picking up today!) and The River of No Return by Bee Ridgway. I am dying for her to finish the sequel! The Discovery of Witches trilogy by Deborah Harkness and Silence by Shusaku Endo (read before watching the movie!) are also great.
