¡DIEGO!

21 December 2016

There's a little someone I've been wanting to introduce you to for a few days and I'm finally doing it. Yee haw. Meet Diego ...

He's the one that is not clad in seasonal pajamas and not overwhelmed at ALL.

His full name is Diego Pat Patton according to the older kids and he's an almost three month old Goldendoodle (an F1B to be exact - which I'm sure not a soul cares about and Simon is definitely rolling his eyes while reading this).

Santa came a little early on Sunday night surprising the kids with a letter ...

Santa/Simon wanted to make very sure the letter looked authentic and was quite aggressive with the lighter. He wanted to go so far as to smear cookie crumbs at the bottom but Mrs. Claus thought that was unnecessary overkill. She was right because the kids ate it RIGHT UP.

A high quality video ...

¡Diego! from grace patton on Vimeo.

I'll spare you the long tour de casa of the kids looking all over but give you the tail (ha ha ha) end. I love that Phoebe found him since she's historically been pretty apprehensive around dogs so please note how quickly she sprints to the back of the pack.

I don't think Bosco has stopped pointing at him and saying, "DAW!!!" since he arrived and I don't think Diego loves it especially when Bosco is barreling towards him with both hands outstretched like an intoxicated Frankensten.

Tolerance is a virtue, D.

Surprisingly, I'd say Phoebe and Sebastian tie for biggest Diego enthusiasts at the moment (he's been here for three full days). I can hear Phoebe holding out imaginary treats and saying, "tum! tum see Feefee, Deego!" all day long. He's SUPER mellow (aaaaalmost to the point that I'm worrying but I keep reading it's normal as dogs acclimate and I'm sure a houseful of crazies is going to take a minute to adjust to) and I know I'm biased but super cute and sweet. He'll be three months old in two days and so far the only thing he has sort of chewed up is one of Simon's dirty socks (maybe because we've got him loaded up with bones and toys a plenty). I know I'm veering over into crazy dog lady territory because earlier today I could tell he wanted to nap but the kids were in wild mode so I considered going and grabbing our spare sound machine to put near his crate (I didn't - but don't put it past me).

the Patton parlor.

Anyway, I'm sure I could ramble on and on and I will in the future (tomorrow) but we feel super lucky to have him and hope he enjoys life under the Camp's roof (and in our backyard with the fancy dog windows c/o the house's former owner).

an audience held captive.

Bosco/shadow -- all the same.

Display of unrequited affection number million of the day.

And now I'm off to read more about how to help dogs acclimate to crazytowns and order Simon a Love My Doodle bumper sticker for Christmas.

(ps - if you have any bone/treat/anything recs - I'd be much obliged. He loves this bone and I was thinking of getting this bed so he doesn't feel relegated to his crate during the day but what do I know?! nothing.)

  2. Grace! Oh my word! My favorite blog and my favorite dog! Goldendoodles are seriously the BEST dogs. Ours is 7 and looks so much like your Diego. She is a dream with my crew of crazies. This is so exciting for you guys! You're going to love him so, so much!

  5. I'm not kidding when I say I want to know if you're a superhuman. My kids would kill for a dog (you're not in danger) and it may never happen for them given their mother's unwillingness to care for another animal/baby.

    1. hhaha!! I'm probably crazy! But he's really, really tame and easygoing (so far!)

  6. The bumper sticker!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. If you need tips for potty training, I now swear by the potty bells. My six month old puppy got the hang of it within 24 hours.. No lie! Can't wait to hear more about Diego :). The bond between a dog and kid is amazing... And that picture with Theo... All the heart eyes!

    1. oh wow - I've never heard of those! He's actually been okay so far but if he relapses I'm all over them. Maybe I can use them when it's time to train Bosco haha

    2. If you're referring to the bell by the door they ring, then yes! It works. My mom did this with her huge African Mastiff. He's a cutie!

  8. The video is priceless. What a sweet addition to your precious family. I have no doubt Diego/saint will be well loved and taken care of.

  9. You're so brace! A times our two dogs make me feel more overwhelmed than the kids. Haha! But he is super cute. Congratulations on the new dog! I bet the kids are absolutely in love. That must be the cutest thing to see.

And you're definitely not a crazy dog lady. We used to leave the TV on for the dogs during the day. It helps drown out sudden sounds that would otherwise get them worked up.

  10. Oh sweet Grace! You are just the living best. This is seriously the cutest and sweetest! We have a 2 yr old and a Wheaten Terrier who is constantly confused for being a golden doodle. Bashie (the dog) wants to love the baby so badly but poor guy has the worst anxiety since he was around first and thinks he's human (might be my fault). Long story long - kids + dogs = chaoticperfection. Enjoy the sweet time
with the kiddos loving on sweet little Diego! It might be overwhelming sometimes, but you've thrived thru 5 kiddies - D ain't got nothin on ya! (You're forever my hero.)

  11. Diego is such a cute name! My husband and I are trying to figure out what type of dog to get for our new home. Besides being good with kids, my main criteria is not much shedding. I'd love to hear more about how you decided to get Diego!

    1. Julia and I have terrible cat allergies so wanted something hypoallergenic and he fit the bill. F1b Goldendoodles are the least likely to shed (I believe!) and Goldendoodles as a whole are often used as therapy dogs (although I KNOW there are tons of great breeds out there! I just know a few people with small children and Goldendoodles that love them so went that route :))

  12. I am so so SO excited for you guys!!! You know I am a crazy dog lady, and Diego is so cute! Getting Caspian last Christmas was the best present for the kids, even though he obviously became my training present. But I love seeing how much kids fall in love with dogs. Such a Merry Christmas already!

  13. Kongs. Our yellow lab LOVED kongs as a puppy. Also - "hide the treat" is a fun game for little kids to play with a puppy/dog. :)

  14. WHAT A CUTIE. Omg. Try smart bones (amazon, duh) we LOVE those, and they are better for them than usual rawhide (which we still give him, but ... effort, right?)

  15. WE LOVE OUR GOLDEN DOODLE! I would say in my experience they are very playful but also on the calm side. I think he'll fit in very well!

  18. I love cats but Diego is the cutest. How fun and how sweet that your kids now have a dog of their own! I love this post and I love the video! Can't wait to see more of him.

  19. oh my goodness this is amazing! The kids are going to love having a dog growing up, always the best! When it comes to toys, we try really hard to buy ones that are only made in the USA as you can really verify what the toy is actually made out of. Also, the first bed you buy, don't spend too much on it. We did and it turns out our golden is NOT a fan of dog beds, so that was a bust.

Also, keep the pictures coming! I'm with you on the crazy dog lady :)

  20. I don't ever post, but I have followed your blog for years now. I've always wanted a big family and enjoy the utmost truth that you display in your posts. Also, very thankful for you sharing your day-to-day with all of us. I've always wanted a Golden-doodle, so now i'm drooling all over trying to keep my excitement contained. I'm the youngest of four children, and I remember getting a Yellow Lab puppy when I was young and it was the BEST Christmas present e.v.e.r. Your post made me relive that moment when our puppy, Cody, came running into our home and us kids lost our minds over him. It made me want to do a special moment with our future children and have them grow up with a special pup. Merry Christmas Patton Family - I truly enjoy every single post.

  21. I second (third? fourth?) the thumbs up for goldendoodles. Our goldendoodle, Maggie, just turned one yesterday and she's such a good dog, particularly with our kids (who are 5 and 2).

  22. Oh girl, you are brave!!!! I highly suggest you head to your beloved Costco and buy a bed there, seriously they best bang for your buck! We heart anything Kirkland brand!

  23. Our pup loves Nylabones too! We also love the "Hyper Pet Chewz Stick Dog Toy" (ordered from Amazon) which is WAY more durable than I ever imagined it would be (especially since he tends to tear toys to shreds within 10 seconds of receiving them - and this one has lasted months of heavy play). We also gave him lots of ice cubes to help with sore teeth/gums when he was teething. Can't wait to see what adventures the kids take him on :)

  24. OMG he's fabulous!!! So glad you got the kids a dog! Dogs are just such great pets... I could go on & on. I have always loved Golden-doodles but have never had one. We have a schnauzer, & in case you didn't know how hyper & barky they are... they are! but she didn't make a peep for probably the 1st week & was very apprehensive in general so I think the whole acclimation thing is true. I also saw where someone commented about bells for pottying, & that's what we use, too. We have a string of bells that hang from the doorknob on the back door & every time we took her out we would say "let's go potty" & take her paw & ring the bells. Now she rings them on her own whenever she wants to go out. Also, I wanted to point out that a lot of people have the (incorrect) notion that putting a dog in a kennel for any length of time is a punishment (just b/c we feel like that would be constricting). I can assure you that it is not. They are very much at home & comfortable in their kennels. So no need to feel guilty if you need to kennel Diego at any point during the day (or overnight). Good luck w/ him! I can't wait to read all about his adventures! :)

  25. We live in Florida also and have tile and wood floors throughout the house. The sleeping on the hard floors can take a toll on the dog's joints as he ages. Our Great Danes have always loved Kuranda beds.

    Good luck and Merry Christmas!

  27. Welcome to the crazy world of DOODLES! Our Mowgli doodle is 2.5 and still the best thing that ever happened to me. He will fit right in in no time- until then, make sure he gets lots of personal time/rest time so he can nap and not be too overwhelmed.

  28. Awww congrats! Diego is adorable! And Merry Christmas! I second the whole kennel thing being good. I grew up with a German Shepherd (had him 6-19) and the rule was when he went in the kennel you weren't allowed to play with him. So he learned to go in there to take break from us kids.

  29. Our poodles love Kongs full of peanut butter or cream cheese, especially if we will be leaving them in their crates for a little while. Our dogs also like Nylabones. They take forever to chew (usually), and keep the dogs entertained so they don't chew our things.

  30. A kuranda bed is best for Southern climates

  31. This sounds disgusting but works very well, especially when his teething kicks in around 6 months... Organic cow hooves from the U.S(we were instructed to not get any others due to different pesticides, etc.) Our trainer got us going on them with our boxer puppy & any time she's chewing something bad, we replace with a hoof. It's a great chew toy and as an added bonus, cleans teeth spectacularly well.

  32. I love this so much! Yay for being crazy dog people:)

  33. We also just got a puppy this summer so we can talk puppy all you want. Our breeder recommended an AWESOME puppy book - written by a group of monks who raise German Shepherds in NY. It was super helpful. The Art of Raising Your Puppy. He's darling!

  34. I'm very glad you guys got a dog, Grace! I remember when you had Lucy for a little while, and always wondered whether you'd ever get another dog. Diego is very cute :)

  35. I have an almost seven month old goldendoole - they are wonderful! I find that ours is super chill as long as she gets exercise. She has allll kinds of toys to chew on (we also make her Kongs and freeze them when we need her to be very occupied). Enjoy - they are the sweetest.

  36. I have an 8 month old mini goldendoodle, he loves to chew on deer antlers (found at most dog stores we found out), keeps him well occupied too rather than chewing on the couch, and my goldendoodle tends to get very warm so there are beds they make that are "stay cool" and they are great!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have an 8month old F1B, he loves to gnaw on deer antlers! You can find them at most pet stores and stops him from chewing on things like the couch! He also gets very warm so the "stay cool" beds are great!

  38. Our new puppy likes the elk antler to chew on best.... There are more expensive versions, but also cheap ones. All sizes.. Better than her chew toys. But also a Kong w/ treats inside is tons of fun.
