gobble gobble

shake it shake it.


I thought I'd do my yearly craft with the older kids this past week before Simon's family arrives so we cut and glittered to our hearts' content one afternoon and the results were wildly underwhelming but the kids were pleased and so - win(nish). I've stared at it so many times that it's starting to look like gob ble gob ble or go bble go bble etc etc.

ANYWAY. My Thanksgiving prep has been p-r-e-t-t-y impressive this year because we've got a Costco sized box of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls chilling (literally, I hear your chuckle) in the fridge and some flameless candles that I just realized need cursed batteries to work. Told you. Impressive. Oh, Simon did buy some of that silverware that looks real but is actually plastic so we are wa-hay-hay more ahead of the game than I thought.

So! I thought I'd poll any kind folks that might be willing to lend your favorite recipe/tradition/whatever my way. Pie, vegetable, yam with deluxe toppings, festive beverages - I'll take any and all. Links or just names of recipes are great - don't feel like you need to type recipes out for me. I was thinking of going the Pioneer Woman mashed potato route, we are buying a ready-to-eat smoked turkey from a local restaurant, and I do actually enjoy making pies (Kate's looks SO good) but if time becomes an issue I have no problem buying more Pillsbury goodness by way of ready-to-bake crust and going that route.

And now I have an entire house to clean.

Happy shopping/cleaning/cooking/baking/prepping/traveling/drinking almost Thanksgiving!

  4. Last year I made a salted caramel pumpkin pie after seeing one at a local bakery. It was very good and kind of spiced up the pumpkin pie without adding a lot more work. I used a recipe from Baking Bites blog. Also, the Hoosier Pie recipe from A Homemade Life is really good too (chocolate bourbon pecan in case you are like me and have no idea what a Hoosier pie is).

  6. I am running around like and idiot with the four kids doing last minute shopping. Did I say idiot? I am. I stole all my recipes from my mama because I am super nice like that. But I am doing a pumpkin swirl cheesecake (martha has a good one here http://www.marthastewart.com/1100071/pumpkin-swirl-cheesecake) and then a blueberry pie, I think I put the recipe on my blog.

  11. Cranberry sauce: 1 bag fresh cranberries, 3/4c-1c sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon. Pour into greased pan, top with sugar and cinnamon. Cover with foil and bake @350 for 30 minutes. Take foil off and stir. Cook uncovered for 10 min. Remove from oven and stir in 2TBS rum (any kind, I prefer dark). Let sit until room temp and then transfer to a sealable container and store in fridge. Serve chilled. Can be made up to a week before time.

  12. I make the Pioneer Woman's mashed potatoes too! I usually volunteer for desserts so I'm also doing a chocolate cheesecake and a chocolate chip cookie pie, both from Mel's Kitchen Cafe. Neither of which I've tried before but am hoping turn out ok!

  14. I love this Pumpkin Pecan Pie. It's perfect if you can't decide between pumpkin or pecan.The bourbon added in the filling doesn't hurt either. And we always use the ready made crust. http://www.marthastewart.com/1160024/pumpkin-pecan-pie

  16. I grew up with this stuffing on the table each year, and it is still my absolute favorite dish for Thanksgiving.     THIS.PIE.OMG. Only 5 ingredients. And you could actually buy caramel sauce and cut it down to 3 ingredients. To die for.

  19. My family's all time favorite dish at holidays is what we refer to as pink stuff. My nana is responsible for this got-to-have-it-every-year jello salad. She found the recipe in the newspaper many many years ago. The original recipe called for lime jello, but somewhere along the way we started using strawberry, hence the name pink stuff. Reading the everything but the kitchen sink list of ingredients makes it sound very unappetizing, but oh when it all comes together, it is magical.

    I make this every year and it is a crowd favorite. Brought it to work this year - and I made the potatoes and baked them in the oven the night before then moved them to the crockpot to keep them warm and made the topping on a cookie sheet.

    Helps with oven space!

    Also my hint is to use actual sweet potatoes cook them for about an hour at 400-450 so they are extra sweet before you add all that sugar ��

A couple years ago, on my old food blog, I put together all my favorite recipes for T-givs and now I just go back to it and have all my fave recipes together.   24. Pioneer woman turkey = amazing!! Also we love this green bean casserole recipe.....however instead of oven roasted onions and panko bread crumbs we fry them in oil with flour salt and pepper, dipped in milk before hand.   26. I just wanted to note that the PW Mashed potatoes are great but I do a version with instant potatoes (yes, i know , but you add stuff & they are good. It's 2 packs of instant potatoes made according to directions. Stir in 1/2 block of cream cheese, two tbsp of butter, and an egg. Bake for an hour. Can be made ahead & baked day of.

  27. I am responsible for the Festival of Pies as my grown girls call it for the family Thanksgiving. This year it is Pecan Pie, Derby Pie (think warm chocolate chip cookie in a crust) and a Lemon Pie. I'm nervous about the Lemon as that isn't really my thing so I'm using my Key Lime Pie recipe and subbing my MIL's Meyer Lemons. How bad can it be?? Oh and the cranberry salad- the old timey jello kind with pecans, fresh chopped cranberries, and crushed pineapple except I make the jello with cran-apple juice. Good luck.

  30. Homemade cranberry sauce - it's my grandma's traditional dish.

    2 cups red wine (the drier the better)
    2 cups sugar
    A bag of cranberries, picked thru
    1 tsp each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves

    Boil the sugar and wine together for 5 minutes. Add the cranberries and boil for 10-20 minutes (the longer you boil, the more jelly-like it will end up). Remove from heat and stir in the spices. Let cool and then put in the fridge until it's time to serve (I usually make it the day before)

    It's also delicious over vanilla ice cream

  31. Luckily we're going to my in-laws this year (last year I did Thanksgiving and I was just a wee bit overwhelmed). I am bringing apple pie (may have to try out Kate's recipe) and a Nantucket Corn Pudding, which according to the website is "a traditional recipe that was popular with the original colonial inhabitants of New England". I've never had it but can you really go wrong with cheese and corn and butter? Guess we'll see! ;)

  32. Butternut Squash and Apple soup! If not for Thanksgiving then you def need to put it on your list of dinner recipes. I make my own recipe each time, but it's basically 2-3 medium sized squash skinned and seeds removed, 6-8 red delicious apples peeled and cored, saute 2 sweet onions until soft, add cinnamon (eyeball it to your tastes), honey (another eyeballer, a good squeeze), squash cubed, apples sliced, 3 boxes of chicken stock, and simmer until super soft, maybe an hour or so. Use emersion blender to make it smooth, if too thick then add a splash of milk or stock. I always taste as I go. It's sweet but not overly and my kids LOVE it. And I LOVE it knowing their picky selves are eating veggies they normally wouldn't touch LOL. It does look like baby food BUT man oh man is it good :) Happy Turkey Day to you and yours!

  34. everyone (seriously) loves my sweet potato recipe and it's super easy! one portion is a ton but i always make two...

    large cans of yams
    can of pineapple chunks
    butter
    brown sugar
    large marshmellows

    drain yams. drain pineapples but save juice. cut up pineapples (small bite size pieces). beat yams. add butter and brown sugar to your liking. add juice from pineapple can. add pineapples last. bake until hot! add marshmellows to top, add to oven and watch until their light golden brown. serve! super easy!

  36. I made those Pioneer Woman potatoes last year - they were delicious! One random tip is if you mix them up earlier in the day and throw them in the crock pot they will stay warm - the edges got a bit brown because I had them on low for a LONG time, but they tasted good!
