master upgrade

Big news in the Patton house! Much to Simon's delight ... we graduated from our full size bed ALL the way up to a Queen. Fancy fancy. Nothing larger than a full size box spring would fit up our attic stairs in the old house and I didn't mind it but Simon claimed his feet hung off the edge and that he had to sleep diagonal and martyrdom was his. So we were using Simon's mattress from med school which was fine but he talked about maybe getting a new one but the thought of trotting off to a mattress store with all of the kids kept that talk from turning tangible. And then in a fortuitously timed twist of events, Leesa (sponsor of this here blog post) asked if we'd like to try out their mattress. Why, yes - we would!

The kids were big fans of the mini fridge sized mattress box. Phoebe and Bash used it to have seated kRaZy face contests. Theo used it as a vanity.

I enlisted the help of my lovely assistant to help me get it set up during naps last weekend ...

in action. knife and all.

And here's how it went down ...

We were both a little skeptical since it was in such a small box but ....

{bed frame found here}

It puffed RIGHT UP.

Vanna said, "get a shot of this .... the Leesa magic is happening RIGHT NOW." So I did.

I enlisted the help of my other lovely assistant to take the mattress on it's maiden resting voyage ...

SOLD.

100%

Simon (sadly!) has the lower back of a 90-year-old and is understandably a tiny bit picky when it comes to mattresses but he's had no complaints and nothing but good things to say about our new Leesa mattress thus far.

Here's the deal with Leesa:

+ they are a lot like the Warby Parker or TOMS of the mattress biz because for every ten mattresses sold, they donate one to a shelter
+ Leesa gives you 100 nights to try your mattress, risk-free!
+ the ten inch mattress comes in all sizes and and is crafted with three unique foam layers (one 2" memory foam, one 2" Avena™ that’s perforated to keep you cool as the other side of the pillow - and it does!)

In the market for a mattress and curious to try? Well, Leesa is giving a generous $75 off the first 20 readers to redeem the promo code: CAMPPATTON by clicking here.

And, tell me ... will we regret not going full on King? So many couples we've talked to say they couldn't live without a King but we are mean parents and only occasionally allow Bosco in bed with us ... no other kids. Ever. But ... maybe we just don't know what we're missing? Enlighten us, please!

  1. So cool. Love the mattress in a box idea. We have a queen (have had for about 5 years) and I think it's the perfect amount of space. We don't bedshare though- if we did, I'd absolutely upgrade.

  2. We have a king and will never go back, but we also have an 80 pound dog that sleeps between us. I have to ask... where is the bed frame from? I LOVE IT. The way our master is laid out, we have to have our bed in front of windows and they aren't even centered on the wall so the bed isn't centered in front of them... it's a sin, really. Anyways, long story short... I'm looking for a bed with a headboard with some "holes" in it so it doesn't completely block the sunlight/air from the windows!

  3. Yes! King! Forever and always! Not sure how tall Simon is but my husband is 6'2" and has the same foot hangage problem in anything but a king. We only have one bebe who never comes in the bed because it's so nice to have all. The. Space. Just for us.

  4. We downsized from a king to a queen. Love the queen so much more! Our room is smaller and it's nice having more space to walk around in. It also makes the room look bigger when you want to sell your house down the road. Neither my husband nor I are the size of toothpicks, but a queen is spacious enough for us!

    1. We also downsized from a King to a Queen for similar reasons. My husband is 6'5", I am 5'5". He wants to cuddle all night, I want some space. So no matter how big our bed is, we end up at the very edge every night, not using most of the bed bc he keeps inching closer and I keep inching further away.

  6. We don't allow kids in our bed either for sleeping and we're happy with a queen. We could go king and may do so someday but I feel like I would almost have to penguin walk next to my bed b/c it would be very close to the wall...

  7. We have five children, ages 1-13, and not one of them has ever slept in our bed (the last two got part of a night here or there as brand newborns, but that's it). We have only ever had a king and can't imagine it any other way!

  8. We don't let our kids in bed either, but we still love having a king. Though, I would kick my husband in my sleep, so...there's reasons we like the space.

  9. It depends on how you like to sleep. My hubby and I are only touching in bed if we are not sleeping (ahem)....when true zzzzs are happening, I don't want to touch at ALL. And that is the beauty of a King. But if you're snugglers anyhow, the Queen should be just fine!

    1. Yep, I need my elbow room. Inexplicably, we cosleep. California King all the way. We are giants though, 5'10" and 6'3".

  10. We just recently upgraded to a King. LIFE CHANGING. My pregnancy body pillow is the size of 5+ Pattons, so maybe that's why it's so necessary (despite 0 children and 0 animals sharing our bed).

  11. Love our queen. We are pretty low key and it fits that well. We do have "guests" in our bed, but the modest queen size gives us a fair reason to send the kids back to their beds, and the bed takes the blame easily.

  12. Woo hoo!!! But listen...I might sell one of my kids before my king bed! HAHA! (kidding...kidding) They all seem to enjoy how much room there is, based on the fact that all four of them end up in there somehow.

  13. I want a king SO(ooooo) bad! We don't bed share with kiddie either (just a kitty) but I am still dying for the extra space (but we have a queen currently--so maybe all about perspective?). Did you have to get a new bed/bedding, the whole 9 yards too? That's the expense that scares me about upgrading.

  14. A queen is all well and good until you go King. There is no going back from a king. We do not bed share but do have two cats. Everyone has their own space. My husband is a oven, so any bit if skin touching while sleeping means I am not sleeping. Space is good :)

  15. KING IT GRACE. You will not regret it.

  16. Once you go King you won't go back ;-) We have a King AND we don't let our kids sleep with us. My husband is a ball of sweat when he sleeps, so it's nice to have some space ;-)

  17. I'm looking forward to seeing how you like the mattress long term! My husband and I are still in a full (all that would fit in our old DC apartment), but I'd like to upgrade soon. Surprisingly, our kid count is still at one. ;-)

  18. We had a queen for our first 8 years of marriage and I thought that was luxury...then our house burned down when I was six months pregnant and I'm like, "KING ME!" It makes a huge difference, especially when you're using two body pillows to get comfy in that third trimester.

  19. King. Forever and always.

We have the same "touching while in bed" situation as the Bigelows (above comment) and never, ever have kids in our bed. And I still couldn't downsize the bed. I love having all that real estate to myself. My husband is a very effective space heater. And I don't want that heat in *my* space while I'm sleeping.

  20. We got a king when we got married, pre 4 kids. I have some "personal space" issues (like I like a lot of it) so wanted room to have my own space... now that we have the kids - I love it even more. Although we typically don't have any in our bed all night with us, it is fun to have enough room for all of them to be in bed with us on the weekend mornings to lay around and be lazy! :-)

  21. We have a queen and it a fine size and most of the time I am my huge pregnant self. We don't co-sleep except for the first two weeks of when baby comes. We sometimes have king when we go to a hotel and it always seems too big. It feels like I have to go searching for Hubby in the bed, but then maybe if we had a king we would not have had seven kids in seven years....so maybe for NFP reason we should get a king.

  22. King it for sure! We did a couple years ago and I haven't regretted it for a second!

  23. When I was hugely pregnant and my husband was 6'10" (Oh wait... That's a permanent condition...), we upgraded to a California King. Now anytime we sleep in a queen it feels like we are lying on top of one another, which as another commenter mentioned, is desirable at times, but not while sleeping. The only downside is that California King sheets cost approximately one billion dollars and are sold at no stores EVAR. Moral of the story, a queen is great if your husband is not abnormally long-legged. And a queen is ESPECIALLY great if you enjoy walking into a store and purchasing sheets, or hopping on the Amazons and purchasing sheets without having to take out a loan.

  24. King ALL THE WAY! I like me some space when I'm sleeping. And my husband has broad shoulders and even in the king he's a little close sometimes. We don't have children in our bed anymore either, but anything smaller feels too small.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The hubs is 6'3 and I'm a fan of personal space. We've always had a king and I won't go back!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like our queen :) we are reasonably snuggly and newborns only in bed with us (well, pets sneak in sometimes) and it works fine.

  27. Welcome to the land of the Queen bed. I have a queen ALL TO MYSELF. If I ever get married, I'm gonna have to get a double triple King, because I will be so used to all my queenly space and hate sharing.

  30. No babies in our bed but we loveeeeeee our king. Serious love.

I'd say at least 1 out of every 2 nights one of us says "isn't this the best bed ever!?" as we're going to sleep. Theres just SO MUCH SPACE.

  31. King beds have so much room -- it's too easy to stay mad if you're feeling grumbly with each other. We have a queen bed, my husband is 6'6", and you just can't stay mad when you're forced to play footsie. Marital harmony = win.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You are missing out without a King!! Seriously, like plenty of room and if you don't want to know there is someone else in the bed with you - you don't have to!!! It is the best way to get the best rest in your own space!!

  33. We planned on co sleeping, with the babies, not just each other, so the first piece of furniture we bought was a king size bed. 17 years and 6 babies later I can't imagine anything but a king. Sometimes we end up with two babies. I think we are finally die for a new bed and will definitely stick with a king.

  34. We recently went through the same debate--king or queen? Many people told us that we'd prefer a king, but we're not big people and were sleeping on a full so a queen what we went with and we love it. I know there are a lot of people who don't like to touch each other at all when they sleep, but that's not us. And, like a pp said, it's hard to go to sleep frustrated with each other if you don't have an island of space in between you. I credit the lack of that space for many a brighter morning in our house--you can't wake up as frustrated if you have to even touch the big toe of the person you're frustrated with all night long. Can't do it!

  35. We have a queen that we've coslept our way through six kids with-though we did have a 3 sided crib up against it for twins. We slept in a king at a hotel last week, and when we woke up I was like, "I could totally do a king for our next bed, honey". He was not sold. Sheets are too expensive, he said. It was so nice, though..I could scoot over to snuggle up to my husband and there was enough space between me and the four month old that it took her longer than 5 seconds to sleep-migrate her way back into my armpit. I think I was far enough away that she could not feel my warmth and home to it. I love sleeping with her, but the space was nice. So we'll see...we have some years left on our current bed.

  36. Love the king...we're usually co-sleeping with one kid and even babies have that weird way of sleeping sideways and taking up all the space :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. King! Kids don't sleep with us but I love having my own space. If your room is big enough I suggest you go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. King! I don't know how we ever slept in a queen. No going back.

  39. We use to co sleep with our first baby in a double bed. Lunatics, I know. We bought a king when we were expecting out next baby and would never go back. I love the Instagram decor you've got going. Where did you print that size of photo?
