alternatives to flip flops

19 March 2015

FINE.

I might be jumping the gun here a little bit because ... March! It's a wildcard. Two Marches ago there was a gross blizzard at the END of the month here in St. Louis only to be followed by a less gross but still gross blizzard at the beginning of MAY (sinful, sinful weather) so to start rushing and packing away the boots and cold weather necessities would just be stupid but during a week like this one (50's and 60's - the weather gods are smiling VERY WIDE on us right now) it's hard not to get into summer weather/less depressing state of mind. Plus it was 80 (!!!!!) on Monday and we went and had ice cream outside in short sleeves after sundown serving as a reminder that the best weather ever awaits us all. So, tolerate me. Please?

Or at least bookmark this post until mid-June when all of these will go on clearance and the stores will start putting out their fall attire. Gross.

I have to add that I'm an authority on nothing -- especially style! And while I don't think it's necessary to get completely decked for a grocery run when you have little kids to get dressed and ready TOO ... it's nice to put a semi nice foot forward and feel slightly more put together than the old yogas and flops routine I tend to fall back on too many times a week. With that said (Harrison style) ... odds are good I'll still be rocking my 3-year-old faithfuls more than I'm not this summer. Hypocrite gone wild.

1. AE Huarache Peep Toe Flats - these have passed the comfort/blister test with flying colors and my low style standards say they look decent with pants and skirts ... win/win.

2. Kenneth Cole wedges - don't trust the photo - they look hideous, I know! They aren't as high in real life and I keep catch myself wearing them around the house even after I'm home because they are super comfortable. These might be my favorites of the bunch. Maybe!

3. Slip on sneakers - trendy trendy trendy but sometimes I'm a total sucker. These are a little bit wider than some (cheaper) styles I've tried which lends to a higher comfort factor. And they spice up the majority of my snoring outfits.

4. AE Colorblocked Peep Toe Flats - just as comfortable as number one but if black is more your speed then these might be for you. Also, I'm wondering if I'm allowed to shop at American Eagle at the tender age of 31.

5. Saltwater Sandals - Odds are great you already have a pair but they are well worth the price tag and if you're like me and like to match your kids footwear ... you're set.

6. Target Glitter Sandals - I don't actually own these but love them and am guessing they were a huge hit last summer if Target brought them back again.

Honorable {but pricier} mention: the sandals I swore I'd never ever wear because my my mom owned three pairs growing up. Yep, trendy as bleep but they are super comfortable and Pinterest tells me I can wear them with socks during the colder months. More bang for your buck, folks.

Any I missed? Dumb question. I missed millions, literally - I'm sure! But any pair that you love and swear by ... I'm all eyes. I saw that Tevas are making a comeback? Fifth grade Grace in all her neon braces and ginorm maroon glasses is ecstatic about THAT.

  1. I have those Target Glitter sandals from 2 years ago and bought a pair for all my bridesmaids this past year too. Happy to see I'll be able to replace mine this year! They are the BEST!

  2. There is no sandal on the planet that it is okay to wear socks with. That includes pricey birkenstocks. :)

    1. Of which I had as a kid. Mine were multi colored. NO SOCKS.

  3. I don't spend much $$ on my footwear, ever! And it is a big mistake because my back is starting to pay for it. So for a Mexico trip I had coming up, I splurged and got these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008F18378/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They were AMAZING! I walked 3 miles to church and back to our resort and didn't have a single back or foot pain afterwards! I can't wait until summer so I can ditch my 3 pairs of socks (I have REALLY COLD feet and they don't see sunlight until the temps are above 80) and get in these and give my back a break!!

  4. I'm a HUGE fan of Chacos. I mean, they probably appeal more to the "outdoorsy" crowd, but I live in mine. Bonus: wearable in water and on long hikes : )

    1. Another high-five for Chacos, even if they're not "fashion-y."

  5. I have number 6 and love them. I am considering number 1&4. I live in Northern California, so sandals are anytime wear, but so are coats in the middle of summer… You too will soon be in the sandals all year boat in Florida.

  6. I have a pair of Chacos, they're a little heavy but great for hiking or at least being out with kids. I also like Toms, super trendy but they're light, easy to pack and come in tons of colors.

  7. Growing up in a hippie town made me swear I'd never wear Birkenstocks like eeeeveryone else. Yeah, bought the Granada's late one night at the mall in desperation for my swollen pregnant feet a few weeks ago and they're all I've worn since. Including to Mass. I look very confused with some outfits, but I play the pregnancy card so rarely, I'mma let them give me this one. ;)

I love these! Made out of recycled yoga mats and oh so comfy! They do get a little smelly towards the end of summer but they are perfect for walking long distances or chasing kiddos.

  9. During tomorrow's forecasted snowstorm I plan to do some retail therapy and purchase either a pair of saltwaters or Clarks Jaina Canaries.

  10. love my birks. I never stopped wearing them so I am going to just play the "not a trend over at my house" card. I think they are worth the money. Saltwaters have my interest and I am going to get a pair for me and my son this year. Twinning is best done with your kids I think!

  11. I'm currently on the hunt for some summer shoes, because, well in Abu Dhabi it is ALWAYS summer! Or so it seems anyway (I really think you'd love it here Grace.....). I love number 1 the most! xx

  12. Those Target sandals are the bees knees (<-- yup just said it) for sure. I just bought them about two weeks ago trying to lift my winter depression and was able to break them out on Monday. They were like little slices of heaven on my feet :-) And they were on sale so major bonus right there!

  13. Grace, you are so hilarious. I just bought a pair of birks. My husband's greatest fear is that I'll turn into a hippie, so he's not real thrilled...but the Olsens say they're still in this year, sooo...

  14. Never will I ever buy birkenstocks. I harbor a tried and true love for my Teva flip flops–I don't mind shelling out $20+ a pair for them, because they last me forever (first pair lasted SEVEN years!!), even when I wear them hard in the summer. Love options 1 and 4 though!

  15. I'm kind of loving the Birkenstocks and I have a birthday coming up so I might need to convince the husband that these would make a great gift! Buuut then again I'm not sure if this black girl can get away with Birkenstocks, hmmm. But some of the styles are so cute.

  16. Oh my gosh! I swear I had a pair of #1s (in white) back in the late 80's/early 90's??!

  17. Ugh...I'm so mad I got rid of my Birkenstocks!! I should have known they would make a comeback! I loved them in high school and college! I still have a pair of shoes, but I really, really wish I kept my sandals! (They were barely worn too...shame on me!) My go-to shoes are Rainbow or Olukai flops and Toms, Toms, Toms...standard style, nothin' fancy! I did just get a pair of Sperrys that I love too! All about the flats!

  18. Okay, love all these! But more importantly, do you currently live in St. Louis? My husband is moving there for the summer and I plan on going to visit a few times, what are must dos while there? And I'm hoping to get maternity pictures taken while there, can you recommend any fantastic photographers?

  19. I hope this is ok, but diapers.com has their Saltwater Sandals 25% off right now! LOVE them on little feet (boy and girl)! I just wish they carried bigger sizes because I totally would've gotten some for me too!

  20. Just by looking at the pictures I was totally eyeing the American Eagle ones! I would have pegged those for a much more mature brand ;) But super cute. After much deliberation I ordered a pair of Rainbow flip flops yesterday. I actually haven't ever owned any, but my husband has some and according to him I copy all his styles.

  21. those all look really cute and comfy and perfect for this march weather. wish i could go shopping for new treads like those......but then i'd have to go and get a pedicure real quick! because no one wants to see toesies that have been hiding all winter long.... right?

  22. Those target sandals are surprisingly comfy for less than $20! I bought them when they had buy one get one 50% off..so one for me and some gold baby shoes for my little one for about $26. I also love my Sam Edelman GiGi sandals, which cost a bunch more, but are really comfortable for how flat they are! And they come in lots of colors and patterns. I'm a California girl for life...so sandals 4eva.

  23. So I've been dying for a pair of Seychelles "Into Thin Air" but the $75 price tag is a leeeeetle high for me...so those AE #1's look like the perfect adorable compromise! Plus, I was just on their website and if you download their app and order from there, they will give you 20% off! And free shipping too...!

  24. Chacos are super comfy and waterproof (yay!) and they stay on your feet. I outgrew my last pair and a new pair is on my wishlist for my bday this year. (Sierra Trading Post is the cheapest place to buy them.) Also, I wear my Birks like 24/7 - they are SO comfy, and yes I know it's a fashion faux pas to wear them with socks but I just can't give them up in the winter sooooo socks it is.
