Julia Styles

vest - Gap via thredup
shirt - Children's Place via thredup
shoes - Puma via eBay ($4 - get on the eBay shoe train, parents!!)
sweater - Target

(Julia picked this ensemble ... mostly to irk Sebastian because that is his vest and his shirt)

I know every parent thinks their children are characters. I do! And if I'm not careful when I'm out without the kids (happens rarely but it happens and it is glorious) I'm watching in horror as a clone of Grace busts out her phone and starts showing randos photos of her kids. Proud peacock needs to rein it in at all times. Anyway, I think Julia is a special and unique little bird but she's my child and of course I'm going to think that. She always always always wears shoes and socks (no pants) to sleep, has a really hard time (emotionally) bathing without socks, and has a ridiculous wake up ritual that involves laying on the floor until she's cognizant enough to face the day.

So lately ...

During a game of hide-and-seek ...
Simon: okay I'm going to hide while you count to ten
Julia: okay!
Simon: and no cheating
Julia: well, what if I just want to cheat a little bit?

Randomly one evening ...
Julia: Can you help me bring a chair outside please?
Grace: why?
Julia: well I just want to climb up and taste a bite of the moon.

Right after I burned my finger and was not being very brave about it ...
Julia: are you okay?
Grace: not really
Julia: oh, are your feelings just not feeling very good?

And after several minutes of me continuing to nurse and curse the burn site ...
Julia: okay, here's the plant
Grace:
Julia: You're just going to do your best and you're not going to cry.

My phobia of answering the door when Simon's not home seems to have made a lasting impression because when I was downstairs doing laundry the other day Julia came crawling into the laundry room and whispered ...
Julia: someone was knocking on the door but I hid and I was riddy riddy quiet

After she accidentally knocked Theo when she was walking by his perch on the floor ...
Theo: crying
Julia: Sorry Theo! It was just an accident
Theo: crying
Julia: Do you know what an accident means?
Theo: still crying
Julia: it means you don't cry

While watching me wriggle into a pair of pants ...
Julia: oooh hmm
Grace: what?
Julia: are you sure those fit, Mom?

Watching Simon change his shirt ...
Julia: oh, Dad! I didn't know you had a baby in your tummy too?!

Recently she was clutching her stomach ...
Grace: what's the deal?
Julia: the junior princess is really kicking hard today

And today she claimed that she forgot how to run but she can gallop just like an elephant ...

... so she did.

    1. I agree with Serena. Furthermore, I want to see a Julia Styles and a Simon Says duke it out. I think Julia would be the victor. Lastly, do you ever bust out laughing when she says these things because I do and I'm just reading them!

  2. I think that all parents should think that their kids are the bees knees; it helps us down play the moments where we wish there was boarding school for toddlers.

  8. Ohh I love these posts! Your new profile pic is just gorgeous. I also find my children to be quite entertaining and am always bummed when Matt's not around for me to share and laugh about it all with...because really, other than my mom, who else really cares.

  12. I hide riddy quietly when the doorbell rings and Shawn's gone, too....and I'm pretty sure I'm creeping my kids out about 'rangers'. She's rocking the layers there.

  15. "junior princess" - fantastic. :)

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one that was raised to be quiet, hide, and/or army crawl to a place where I can secretly peek out the window when someone comes knocking at the door! My husband thinks I'm crazy when I tell him I do it but Julia is making me feel better about myself.

  17. Not to scare you or anything BUT...at one of my MOPS meetings (way back when I had preschoolers) we had a sheriff who came to talk to us about safety. He told us that when we were home alone during the day and the doorbell rang we should always answer it. Because apparently, a lot of daytime robbers will ring the bell to see if someone is home. If no answer they will try to break in. If someone answers (even if it is a woman) they will typically use a fake excuse and then beat it to the next house. He said to always answer the door and pretend to be talking on the phone. That way the person would know there was someone on the other line that you knew and that would scare them of as well. I've done that several times. Plus, if it is a real salesman, you can use the "phone call" as an excuse to not speak to him.

  18. Julia is amazing! And I am so happy someone else is an paranoid as me about answering the door when the hubs is not home. I mean I am pretty stealth like and I can see them, they just can't see me. And my boys much like Julia tend to just ignore the fact that someone is there. haha! Conversations with three year olds will always be my favorite.

  23. Dude I wish my kids would get the picture about answering the door. I drop to the floor and they're like MOM SOMEONE'S HERE AREN'T YOU GOING TO ANSWER THE DOOR?!? at top volume so there's NO mistaking that we're here.

  29. cute kid, but let's talk about this ebay shoe thing? did the $4 include shipping? whenever i look, the shipping price totally takes away from the good deal factor.

  38. I never answer the door either, we get too many sales people in our neighborhood. I had to train the kids to ignore it, one too many toddlers answering the door while I'm in the shower or using the bathroom. With 5 kids, I know they can hear us inside, I used to feel rude about it but now I've gotten to the point of not caring. Too many crazy people out there, not worth the risk.

  39. Why did I never think of eBay for kids shoes?! I try to shop Facebook yard sales for dress shoes for the kids, but the selection is limited.

  40. I am pretty sure I have used the "an accident means you don't cry" on my kids. Last night. When it was my fault. But an accident.

  41. I love the answering the door phobia. I almost never do it either because it is so chaotic with the kids running out and being overly friendly while I am trying to politely say no the random solicitor. I need to teach my kids to run and hide though... right now they loudly tell me someone's at the door.
