30 going on 17 (and a gigando thank you)

05 November 2013

sweater - Forever XXI
boots - Carlos Santana
glasses - c/o Firmoo

I'm pretty sure this was a sort of semi-trendy outfit for 17-year-olds about two years ago but I still get super excited whenever Thrift Shop comes on the minivan's radio and when Thrift Shop is followed by Roar? Forget it. Excitement level through our non-existent sunroof. So I'm wearing it - outdated tall boots and all. I do love the new ankle boot trend but tall boots will always have my heart. You see - I drove baby Julia to the mall on the WEST side of Wichita (we lived on the EAST side which was a whole 9 minute away) to hit up Famous Footwear for these babies. And you have to understand that Julia was a HATER of the car seat and the stroller (or maybe she was just spoiled by clueless parents because the boys have taken to travel by automobile and stroller wheels JUST fine) so really the entire odyssey was just a big fat labor of tall boot love. Your life is brimming with meaning now that you know that story. Don't I know it.

And let's address the scraggle haired elephant in the room that is my hair that has since been trimmed/butchered. I know it needed to be trimmed but (as always after I get a haircut) I now have a glorified mushroom cut. Simon's always saying I should wear my hair up more so wish no more, dear husband! because up it will be for the rest of eternity ... or until 2016 when it finally grows past my neck scar. Gross ends over Ramona Quimby mom chops forever.

And I kind of bet follow-up preg posts are kind of annoying but I really wanted to thank you thank you thank you for all of the incredibly kind comments and emails on yesterday's post. I was overwhelmed - I still am. We are SUPER excited and feel very blessed. One person asked how I found out so ... let me overshare for one sec. Back in August I was falling asleep really easily during the day - (while the kids were awake - negligence be mine!!) and so I took an early test (against my better judgment but I stilll did it) on our anniversary on a whim and bada-bing bada-positive. So it was kind of fun to tell Simon at dinner for our 4th anniversary that we were expecting our 4th little cherub. This has been a tougher pregnancy than all three of the other pregnancies combined but I know the extreme sickness is a healthy sign and the baby looks great and I'm chugging along at 14.2 weeks so God is good. Julia has made it VERY clear that she does NOT want another brother and when the little sister comes she will be naming her Patrick. Sebastian likes the name, "mommy". Theo not care.

And that's a wrap. Or a belted sweater. Whatever.

  1. Please don't tell me the tall boots are going out... I just broke down and bought a pair this past weekend!!! YIKES!! I had no idea!! Congrats on #4 - I am a happy (mostly) mommy of 4 and life is always exciting with at least one, if not all, doing something that would alarm any person in their right mind!! Love the names that the kids picked out for your newest! Take care!!
PS I shopped in a Forever 21 store for the first time also this past weekend, thanks to seeing all this cuteness on your blog.... um, liked the styles - but the fits were not made for me and my good German heritage..... (in other words, thickness....) :-)

  3. See what happens when I skip a day of reading a Camp Patton post??? Congratulations!!! I'm pregnant with #4 as well and am only a few short weeks ahead of you. I took 3 pregnancy tests - 2 of which were positive without a doubt, but because umm...pregnancy brain? I totally thought they were negative.

And your hair looks fabulous! No mushroom thoughts when I saw it. But you just have gorgeous hair in general, so there you go. I opted to chop mind off (the hairstylist kept saying, "Are you SURE you want to cut 8 inches off? You seem so calm about it." To which I replied, "I have a 2 year old daughter who likes to play peek-a-boo through my hair." She didn't get it...I don't think she has kids.) and now it rests under my chin. Not sure it was the best move, but I'll go with it. I've had worse. So, this tangent was typed to make you feel better about your beautiful hair :).

  4. I am pulling for a sister for Little J, too! mostly just because i want to hear another girl name from you :) weird? probably. i will always prefer tall boots over ankle boots as well.

  5. I really hope tall boots don't go out.... I wear mine ALL. THE. TIME!!! Congratulations on the newest addition to your family, how exciting!!

  6. Chris was the ring leader concerning opinions on his parents' baby #8's name. He started calling my mother-in-law's belly, "Patrick." My mother-in-law is WAY nicer than I am and lo and behold when the baby was born, he was named Patrick even though that wasn't exactly the original plan. Those oldest children are dangerous ...

Love that you told him on your anniversary! And you look gorgeous!

  7. The tall boots are an outgoing trend?! Say it ain't so! I will love mine forever and a day. I'm crushing on your sweater right now, both because it's cute and because it's snowing (vom) so I just want warm comfort clothes.

  8. My bestie (yes, I just said bestie - I too am 31 going on 17) has those boots and I will always love them. Also, I think I might have to copy cat and go to F21 to get that very sweater, yes please.

  9. Congrats! The video was super cute. I'm excited for you to add a new little camper to the bunk:) I didn't know that tall boots were out...I'm asking for brown ones similar to yours for Christmas. I like 'em and they are a step up from my usual uniform of sweat pants and a zip up hoodie!

  10. I am going to assume the "outdated" before "tall boots" was a joke. Don't take away my boots unless you are also going to take away skinny jeans because I can't have the latter without the former...

  11. Yay, congratulations! I'm expecting my second, I'm due to June 21st. Can't imagine how you're handling all the sickness plus taking care of three children. I have a baby (Theo's age by the way) who's such a little angel and yet I'm having a really hard time!

  12. Confession: I didn't watch your video yesterday. But I just went back and watched it now! Congratulations! My third is due April 18th and I am totally in awe of you for juggling three littles with morning sickness (mine are 4 and 2).

  13. That Aztec sweater is awesome. I keep seeing them and have been scheming...

Ugh to the prego sickness. Heart zofran forever ;) but itty bitty babes are worth it for sure!

  14. My brother wanted to name me (a girl, obviously) George Plimpton. I'm glad my mother didn't listen to him.

Also, I really like your outfit. Tall boots, leggings, leg warmers, long Aztec sweater, freshly trimmed hairs - all good to me. But I may be going through a mid-life (maybe just a quarter-life) crisis right now so I might not the best judge of what's appropriate for an adult woman to wear. ;)

  15. I missed yesterdays post so I missed the great news. I'm very happy for you Grace. A new baby is a beautiful blessing. Congratulations to the whole family!!

  16. You can have two more boys and be me! Ha!! That will fix Julia's wagon. And tall boots are totally still in - judging by what is in the shoe stores. Ankle boots do not flatter. And I love the sweater. I have no idea where a Forever 21 store is near me. Not close, since I've never seen one.

  17. Tall boots will never die!! Stop causing hysteria ;-)

  18. Gah, I recently splurged on a pair of really nice tall boots - my ONE new fashion purchase this fall amid a major spending fast - and no sooner had I hit "purchase!" at Piperlime.com than an email came through my inbox from some fashion site with the subject line "Tall Boots are Over!". I may have teared up. Way to crush my high, world. Great story, I know but yeah, I'm with ya. Tall boots 4evr.

  19. Sigh on the tall boots going out...I will probably wear mine way past their expiration date because I love them so. Even though every time I wear them my husband asks if I'm going horse-back riding later. Every. Time. And it never gets old.

I do have a pair of ankle booties (from last year so they are probably unstylish now too) and I was just in Target today looking at some others but just didn't have it in me to pull the trigger. Not sure what I'm waiting on but blech...I hate shopping now that I'm pregnant and large. I guess I should be out exercising while the kids are in school. Instead I prefer sitting on my ever-expanding arse and eating Halloween candy.

  20. Bah! I missed your announcement yesterday too! But yay it's still wonderful today! Happy number four!

  21. Congratulations Grace! That is such wonderful news, and I'm very happy for you! I look forward to many weeks of funny pregnancy posts! :)

  22. I watched your pregnancy announcement last night while I was taking a bubble bath (TMI?) and something towards the beginning of the video made me think it was an announcement. So I screamed "GRACE IS PREGNANT WITH HER FOURTH CHAP!!!!" to which my husband replied..."Who the hell is Grace? And, congratulations!". Then I decided I was wrong, so I announced that, then I realized I actually was right, so I had to announce that. Whew.

Congratulations!!!! I am looking forward to the pregnancy posts! I'm oddly fascinated by a good pregnancy share even though I have no kiddos. Weird, but true.

PS - When asked who the hell you were I replied "My imaginary friend on the interwebs. You know, the one with the hair I stalk!".

  23. Well jeggings and tall boots are all I'm wearing every day because surely they're a step up from yoga pants, right? Comfy + warm + sorta put together looking = a WIN!

  24. Aw, I just finished the video! I started before, but, you know. Yeah. Anyways, that makes me so happy!! And gives me a little hint of baby fever! Congratulations, you and baby4 will be in my prayers!

  25. Don't think I'm weird but I've watched the video three times [since yesterday so it's not totally weird]. I'm done now though, I promise. Congratulations to your whole family!!! I think Julia has a real gift when it comes to baby names. And I love this outfit...especially the boots!!! I've been looking for boots that have the red on the zipper but we don't have a Famous Footwear, a DSW, or any other bigger shoe stores in the part of CA where I live so I'm just waiting for Target so up their selection.

  26. I'm just getting caught up on my blog reading. Congrats on your little one!

  27. I hope Miss Julia gets her way and a little bundle of pink is on her way. Whoa to you and Simon if it's a Baby Boy. I would hate to be the one to break the news to her. LOL!
I will pray that you are feeling better soon and your energy returns. Blessings and Hugs to you all from VA!!

  28. First of all, if tall boots are going out of style then just shoot me. And if they look like a 17-year old then, well, I'll be 17 forever. I love your whole outfit!

    ReplyDelete
  29. What a fun story of how you and Simon found out! I don't mind that you overshared :D

  30. Julia cracks me up! I can only imagine how bad she wants to but a baby in tutus!! And I will always be apart of the mommy tall boot club, is that a club yet? And I have this sweater in olive, so that means clearly I have passed initiation for said boot club :)

  31. How sweet is that?! And the video! I have three about the same age separation as you and I don't think I'd be as cute or sweet or super excited, but God provides the grace, Grace! You're inspiring me! Blessings!

  32. Love this outfit - boot cuffs, mom chop, et al. And Julia's name suggestion is too hilar. I had to read it to my husband and, while he thinks I'm weird for cyber stalking someone I don't even know, couldn't help but crack a smile.

  33. I will forever love tall boots and I feel like this outfit is totally in! I'd wear it, but I guess that doesn't say a whole lot. So neat to tell him your expecting your 4th on your 4th!

  34. I just watched the video before reading this post - omg congratulations!!!! how exciting. can't wait for the camp to have six campers. the cuteness never ends around here. :)

  38. Yay! Congratulations! I will keep you and baby in my prayers.
I could not watch the video yesterday because I was on my Kindle, but I just watched it on my trusty desk top. Very exciting! :)

  41. Congratulations to Camp Patton!!

  42. Patrick would make a great name for another girl; Patty for short? haha...I LOVE LOVE LOVE a thousand times LOVE your boots and your sweater. I think they both just made my christmas wish list :D I am so terribly sorry you're sick. You are a freaking champ. The two times I've pushed my two kids in the double stroller, and they've fussed and cried and hollered the whole way, I just think Grace does this with THREE (and now FOUR), suck it up woman (meaning myself, not you).

  43. Girl, I love your boots! "Outdated" be damned! I'm wearing the same black dress boots that my husband gave me for my birthday 3 years ago and I rock those biznatches. You look great! I'm a newer reader and am so excited to be following you on this pregnancy journey!

  44. YAY BABY I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU. I also really like the name Patrick for a sister. Julia is brilliant.

  45. What I miss one post and you are pregnant!!! I shall never miss a post again no matter how important school and life is!!! Congratulations!!! I will pray for you and hope you start feeling better soon!!!!!!!

  46. Well no kidding when I saw that outfit I thought, "what an adorably stylish outfit for a pregnant girl, I'm totally copying." lol. My wardrobe of late has been frump city so that outfit is practically couture. I am rushing of to F21 for that sweater!

  47. Hey since when have your pictures been all fashion bloggery and nice? I remember they used to be all blurry and stuff on your neighbor's driveway but now they are like a million times better. Are you still taking them yourself or have you acquired a photographer boyfriend just like the other fashion bloggers?

And how did I miss your announcement? Oh, I know. Because I usually scroll past videos, but anyway congratulations! Is it weird that I am in awe that you are having your FOURTH child, because you are superwoman for being able to be outnumbered by the kids? But then I think, like 50 years ago, women had like millions of babies and no one batted an eye? My husband's grandma had 12 kids. TWELVE. I can't even imagine how much screaming and whining that would mean. Congrats and hope your 4th pregnancy is treating you well! :)

  48. I still rock the 17 year old garb too, but not as well as you do. I'm so happy for you!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Now I have to know how you told the Si-Man. And how did he react? Paint a picture. Make it nice.

  50. Oh I missed the video post. Just looked at it. You are hilarious and I am so excited for you guys. I hope it's a girl too so Julia can be happy :D

  51. That is the cutest way to share with Simon! And wouldn't it be awesome if you had this baby on May the 4th and with it being the 4th child it would be the funniest to do the whole May the Fourth be wtih you jokes. No?? Lame? Yeah.

Side notes: Your hair is fabulous and I have no idea what "mushroom" type haircut you're talking about. And - I know that you always carry very small but seriously - for being half-way pregnant...you stink for being the cutest, tiniest looking lady! xoxo

  52. You have all cute stories like finding out on your wedding anniversary. Can't even remember where/how I found out with my kids. Can't wait to hear updates!

  53. Okay, so I was thinking about you and your 4 bebes today and thought "oh no how is she going to go for a wog!" (really weird that strangers think about you huh?) But don't worry… I found the answer… behold
