Seven Quick Takes

02 August 2013

Linking up with Jennifer Fulwiler.

1. Sebastian went downstairs to play for five minutes this morning before we went on our little walk/run and when we got back and I ran down to switch the laundry I genuinely wondered if someone had broken into the basement and thrown a temper tantrum in the laundry room. It was that weirdly messy ... like you couldn't see the floor and it is not a small room. Simon just laughed at me and asked if I'd ever met Sebastian but seriously ... never invite him over to your house. He only seeks to ruin lives -- specifically mine.

2. Just a few days left to enter to Albion Fit giveaway. Get it.

3. Hmm ... here's some shots from a minute at our abode this morning ...

a. Our little puppy hoping I'll drop some food on the floor.
b. Sebastian off to rip a vent out of the wall or something (I wish I was kidding but Simon REALLY wishes I was kidding as that was maybe the most unpleasant discovery to date ... )
c. Julia's hair sort of fits into one "veggie tail" as she calls pony tails. Of course she is watching Netflix ("just one episode! I puh-romise" and then we talk about how there isn't going to be a meltdown after just one episode and she is good about this 88% of the time) because if ever there was a child that loved herself some screen time - it is Julia Grace. Signs you know you're doing things right right right in the parenting sphere.

4. Okay so I finalllllly watched this week episode of the Bachelorette. Dubya tee eff. Do we even watch next week? It's just going to be two really disappointed guys and then what ... After the Final Rose is an interview with Des and no one? Chris will ask her 99 question about just how devastated she was and I don't know if I can handle it. And if her brother says, "I told you so" with his little smirk I will never forgive him. Basically I hope ABC learned their lesson and will pick less awful guys next time around. Holy horrible selection. I do want to know where can I get my hands on Desiree's makeup? She cried for 8 hours straight (no judgement here ... ) and her makeup didn't budge ...

If she permanent sharpied mascara onto her lashes ... she is a genius. I'm not above copycatting. And as always ... my girl Jones did not disappoint.

5. Last summer's Grace hates me for saying this but this weirdly mild weather is nice but almost depressing because I feel like fall is just around the river bend with all the colors of the wind and then comes winter. Winter always takes a little piece of my soul and kills it forever because I hate hate hate hate hate cold weather. So if summer decides to pull a 2012 and start frying St. Louis all over again ... I won't complain. I swear.

6. I don't even want to try because I know it won't be adequate but I really cannot thank you all enough for being so sweet and supportive of Wednesday's post. Wow. I'm surprised my inbox didn't just sprout wings and fly straight to heaven because it was that full of NICE. Fellow Catholics, non-Catholics, NFPers, non-NFPers ... everyone was great and it was really interesting to hear different perspectives and like-minded perspectives but it was just SO refreshing that everyone was nice. My love/hate relationship with the internet is all about the love right now. Thank you!!

7. Oh! A question for you fine readers because you rarely disappoint! Wondering what your favorite drugstore mascara is these days? I'm almost out and am hoping to find THE ONE. You know what I'm talking about.

Have a good one. I'll probably be overgramming the weekend because we get to see a ton of family. Some of my siblings have never even met Theo ... insanity.

Bye.

  1. I just bought 'Almay intense i-color volumizing' mascara for my pathetic stubs of colorless lashes. I like it:) The best part? There are different shades of mascara for different eye colors AND the packaging is color coded. Meaning if you have green eyes you buy the one in the green package. Easy peasy.

  2. I am a L'oreal Voluminous (Waterproof) and throw on a couple layers. Haven't found another...yet. Will be perusing the comments for ideas. :)

Bash lives up to his nickname.

Julia's veggie tail is all kinds of adorable!

  3. Sharpies for mascara? OMG I kinda want to do that...although I would suggest CG clump crusher or L'oreal telescopic varieties since those have been my 2 favs recently.

Also J does the "Sebastian laundry room treatment" every time I gate him in his room so I'm sure they would be pals.

  4. Mascara - You MUST try Maybelline's (and do as I do - while going down the aisle searching for it, sing their little ditty - "Maybe it's Maybelline"....) Full & Soft - I only use waterproof, due to contact lenses...

Here's a link (hope it's legal to post these. They don't pay me)Their mascara is the only thing does not clump, and it actually makes me look like my 3 or 4 blonde lashes number more like 100!

  5. THIS.
    http://www.maybelline.com/Products/Eye-Makeup/Mascara/the-Colossal-Cat-Eyes-Washable.aspx

It's amazing and fantastic and makes me look like I'm wearing false lashes but it also doesn't hate eye makeup remover and it stays on all day long but then when I use eye makeup remover it's like "K BYE!" and that was the longest run on sentence ever because I had an extra large cuppa coffee YOU'RE WELCOME.

  6. I have sworn by Loreal's voluminous mascara (it's in the gold tube) forever. It replaced my fancy-pants Lancome mascara. You know, back when I was buying makeup from a fancy makeup counter instead of Target. :)

  7. Anything by Maybelline has worked great for me and my stumps for lashes. I am currently rotating last stiletto, colossal volume and mega plush (who am I kidding, I'm not rotating, I'm caking on all three). But I love them. I was a Clinique girl before the kids but now 5-8$ for a tube hellz yes.

I hope Le Bash didn't fill you vents with "treasures" like Easton did ours. We are still missing a half a box of crayons and blocks and one decent sized dinosaur toy...

    Boys.

Have a great weekend! Jealous of all the hands to hold kiddos you will have!

  8. YES TO #5!!! i was thinking that just this morning, as i once again walked to work in completely mild weather that did not cause me to sweat from every pore. sigh...i miss the heat wave...

  9. Cover Girl Lash Blash Fusion has been "the one" for about six months for me...which is a record as far as "the one" goes. Lots of volume and multiple coats don't make me have creepy spider-leg lashes - winning all around!

    As always, love your posts!

    1. I'm with Abbie. Volume and length without clumps. Love it.

    2. Ditto! I've used the orange covergirl for a few yrs and love it! Plus there are always plenty of covergirl coupons about.

  10. I recently switched to all natural products and my favorite cheap mascara in that realm is Boots No7 maxiumum volume (got it at Target). Before I switched my favorite was CoverGirl Lashblast (the orange tube).

  11. Pretty sure I'm gonna get fired because I can't stop laughing like a crazy person at this sentence...."Sebastian off to rip a vent out of the wall or something". I don't know why it's so funny but it is.

As for mascara, I'm stalking the comments because I haven't found "the ONE" yet either.

If you ever move back to Kansas (Rock Chalk territory) can I please baby-sit your kids? They seriously crack me up. (Hoping I don't regret this question someday:))

This one!! Of the drugstore mascaras, this is the greatest. And if anyone is ever looking to give you a present, direct them to this one:

    http://www.clinique.com/product/1606/5416/Makeup/Mascara/High-Impact-Mascara/index.tmpl

Holy shenanigans is it fantastique! At $16, it's not that much more than the drugstore variety and it makes my lashes go va va voom. Both of these are non-waterproof and easy to remove- because who has time to spend 15 minutes trying to pry the waterproof stuff off your lashes while trying to leave your lashes attached to your face? No one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. OK. Can't really answer the mascara question because I usually walk down the aisle and grab the lowest price. But, I really want to know about Costco and do you buy in bulk, because I can't store bulk. Is it worth paying to buy groceries? Any real savings or just a fun place to go?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love that tube mascara stuff. It's amazing...no raccoon eyes and so much easier to remove at night. I used the Blinc kind forever but it is pricey so I recently to switched to Loreals tube mascara and its almost as good for 1/4 the price. Comes in a red tube. I buy mine at Target.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just picked up Cover Girl "Exact Eyelights" and I was actually impressed. It claimed to play off the color of your eyes so brighten them and yesterday it did just that. I was having a terrible day but a few swipes of the mascara and instantly brighter eye. Maybe it was all in my head but I'm saying it worked.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's been weirdly cool here in Chicago too...and it's got me feeling suspicious. If it just stays nicely mild for a few more months, I feel like that's kind of awesome. Mother Nature and I don't get along super well though, and so I'm feeling like it's more likely that we'll have some nice weather for another week, and then winter will start in September.

Then, I can assure you, it won't matter what mascara I'm wearing (though I love Maybelline's Define-a-lash), I will be crying for much longer than 8 hours straight. Or I'll convince myself that my kiddos and I need to hibernate, and we'll eat our way through all my pinterest desserts in an attempt to build up enough "stores for the winter." I'm sure the fat will come...but I'm equally sure the kids would never agree to a couple-months of nap. Alas.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Grace I am glad I'm not the only one! This pleasant weather has me mildly panicked about winter coming early. Winter is hell. Sure Christmas is nice but jan, Feb, March with the fevers and the vomits and the can't go anywhere slush cold stuff on the ground. I'm with you! Give me another heat wave!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love these recap types of posts. They make me smile for sure... As for mascara, Maybelline's the Colossal Volume Express. I found it about two years ago and I will cry if they ever stop making it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm a good-old fashioned Maybelline green and pink mascara, blackest-black kind of girl - but I got a sample of benefit(?)'s "They're real!" from Sephora and am now reconsidering...

    ReplyDelete
  20. BirchBox has forever ruined drugstore mascara for me. They sent me Fibre Lashxtend by Modelco (http://www.birchbox.com/shop/modelco-fibre-lashxtend) and blinc Tube Mascara (http://www.birchbox.com/shop/blinc-mascara), and I will never use drugstore again. (This from a girl who wears $3 foundation.)

  21. We call them "pink tails" around here rather than pigtails, and the braided version are referred to as either Dorothy -as in Oz- or Dora braids.

Maybelline Great Lash in the pink tube. I swear by it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. loreal voluminous- been using it since high school and on the rare occasion that i have deviated it has not been good.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "Bye" (Actually my favorite part of this whole post.)

    ReplyDelete
  24. What Sarah said. Love the Loreal Voluminous. I also love the Cover Girl Lashblast Luxe.

Can't wait for the overgramming. Yay for family visits!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm new here, but your posts are my favourite. You are just so funny!!

Mascara...well, my eye lashes fell out in the great hair shed of 2011 when my son was born. I have like wisps now. The only thing that works is Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara. It is freaking expensive but it is the price I have to pay to not look like a serial killer.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm with you on the STL heat wave, the cool weather is seriously cutting into our swim time. Instead of taking advantage of it and heading to the zoo (or something equally awesome in mild temps) I've been super cleaning & organizing the house to get ready for the upcoming homeschool year when I'll have zero time to do any projects. At least I can look forward being stuck inside this winter in a clean house (if the kids don't wreck it before then, which I'm sure they will). Sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Like several of the previous comments, I also love Cover Girl Lashblast, the orange tube, non-waterproof. I'm a ginger with "invisible" eyelashes, and this is the best one I've tried, which is more than a few! I've been using it for about a year now, and considering how often I used to switch that's pretty amazing for me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I do worry about this mild weather...I sure as heck hope that doesn't mean winter starts in October this year, I just can't handle it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mascara... Cover Girl's Clump Crush by LashBlast is my fave... I use it in waterprof very black and coat each eye twice. Big time full lashes!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Definitely try Cover Girl's Clump Crusher. I had a couple of free samples of Bare Minerals mascara and freakin' loved it but just can't bring myself to pay $18 per tube of mascara to chase toddlers around, so I tried Clump Crusher. It is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I use bareminerals mascara and I love it. But you probably shouldn't take my word for it.

Ha. My guy is 7 months younger than Bash and I think they would be partners in crime. Uprooted plant, cup of milk all over his crib, emptying the vacuum canister and epic face plant in the past 48 hours. They are from the same pod I think. And bonus: we're in the QC and you come here anyway sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hmph. Thanks for putting Just Around the Riverbend in my head.
As for mascara, I recently switched back to my Voluminous False Fiber Lashes (Loreal) mascara from a fancier mascara and wondered why I had bothered with the pricier stuff. I've shopped around, and I think it's the best of the drugstore varieties.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Me gusta it MUCHO!

    http://www.amazon.com/Maybelline-Falsies-Express-Washable-Blackest/dp/B003I6O5RC

    ReplyDelete
  34. Loreal Voluminous in waterproof. Love love love love it. I've strayed from it once or twice and always come back to it. Best one out there that I've found hands down.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express (I guess that's how we spell volume now?) but just spotted some reccos for Colossal Cat Eyes above and that sounds even better so now I'm questioning everything I know and running to the drugstore.

Good luck w/ the hunt and the crazy kiddos - and I agree on the weather! It's been downright balmy here in NYC, save one hot week, and I'm feeling so back to school mournful already!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Almay one coat triple effect. The non waterproof (because when they say water proof they mean no water will ever get it off). I get dark brown. Looovvveeee it!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have two mascara recs, dependent on your eyelash type (that's a thing, sure): If you have thicker lashes that you want to look longer try the Colossal Cat Eye. It lengthens like crazy, but can make lashes look a bit spiky if you don't have some volume to begin with. For longer lashes you want to add volume to, I've been liking the Revlon Lash Potion mascara (it's new and my current fave). If you want both... try them together? First the Revlon, then the Maybelline. So sayeth the totally untrained mascara obsessionist.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm def thinking Brooks comes back this week....because....what else could happen for two hours (I mean it's The Bachelor so obv NOTHING is going to happen for those two hrs anyway.....)

Mascara. I buy the Covergirl-purple-or-orange-tube-whichever-they-have-that-month they sell in three packs at Costco. Cause they got coupons for those alllll the time. Works fine.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Someone highly recommended Rimmel's Extra Super Lash in their 5 favs, so I tried it and am sold- it's cheap too! But, I have to say the best mascara I've tried is a dept. store brand, and it's of course $$.
Signs of fall are so depressing! I would love for summer to go on and on until I get sick of it- then fall can show up!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just have to say that I was scrolling down my list of blogs to read and today this one comes up with Theo's happy face beside it... Just made my day!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love maybelline's full and soft. It beats out my Bare escentuals, esp the water proof one.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Covergirl Lash Blast ( orange tube) is a million times more fantastic than any of my trendy brand/makeup counter ones!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have been using Loreal Voluminous for YEARS!!!! I swear by it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm a bit ashamed to talk about my favorite mascara. I was in a country town on the way to a farm wedding when I realized I hadn't put mascara on. Stopped at a drug store out of desperation and grabbed the cheapest thing I could find (figuring I'd use it once)... Wet N Wild Fergie (yes like Fergilicious) mascara. OMG BEST MASCARA EVER! I will never go back to the more expensive stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  45. How many siblings do you have, Grace? I've been meaning to ask. Also, I'm following this thread because I've never found a mascara (drugstore or otherwise) that I've been truly happy with.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've been using Covergirl Clump Crusher for every day, quick application. It's great. If I wanna get fancy, I use Maybelline Great Lash. There's a newer version that's less clumpy. It makes my lashes look much longer and everything, but it tends to smear a bit under my eyes...especially in the hot makeup melting summer weather. Best to keep it to nighttime dinners out only. So basically, it's drying out in my drawer.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like NYC's curling mascara. I think it's called City Curls. It's the only one I've found that actually gives my lashes any curl without having to use an eyelash curler.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So my fav mascara can't be purchased at the drugstore but it has a drugstore price tag... does that still count? It's by Prestige Cosmetics (ooohhh fancy pants) and it's called "My Blackest Lashes". It's a drier formula which I love, but it doesn't flake (can you tell that I have put a lot of thought into this?) You can buy it at Ulta. ITS AMAZING. I generally hate drugstore mascara because I find I'm allergic to a lot of them, but this is awesome. I mean, I prefer it to most every mascara I've tried with the exception of Mally's Volumizing Mascara which is my fav of all time (you can get 2 tubes from QVC for $28 which isn't terrible).

You know, because I appreciate your awesome Catholic witness and your NFP openness but really mascara is more important and warrants a really long comment.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am ALL about Almaty's One Coat Get Up & Grow!!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. *Almay. Apparently a pirate took over my phone's autocorrect.

    ReplyDelete
  51. ha! I'm writing a really riveting post about mascara right now! Spoiler Alert: nothing evereverever beats Voluminous.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My favorite mascara is Maybelline "The Falsies." It's the one in the purple bottle!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I ditto Chloe! OBSessed with the Falsies:)

And.. I'm weirdly excited to watch the rest of the bachelorette.. What in the world is she gonna do? This last episode was all awkward and full of Brooks hair. EVERYwhere. Slightly relieved I don't have to watch him flip is over on more time

    ReplyDelete
  54. My boys- also human wrecking balls- have pulled vents off the wall, but they were not in any way sealed on here, they just sort of sat in front of holes. Sol used to toss toy after toy down there and we couldn't get them out. We used the bathroom caulk to glue them all in place after using a shop vac and huge tube to go fishing for toys dropped down there 2 years before. It was an exciting morning around here. Which is really pathetically true.

    ReplyDelete
  55. No.5- I think we stole some of the good weather this year, seriously we barely had a winter this year, I apologize for stealing some of your summer;) ( I HATE winter!)
no6.- So NFP stuff, maybe I was the only one confused as to why your babies being close in age was bad or why people would be nasty about it? and the more the merrier right? Fingers crossed for you for no. 4:).. My husband and I are christians and I havn't been on the pill for 3 years, I didn't even know that was NFP, no protection just counting and zero babies so far, I figured we just had skills hahaha- didn't realise it even had a name (blonde) Now I'm going to tell people we use NFP thereby forcing them to ask me what NFP is and I can explain and sound super clued up;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. I swear by Rimmel Extra Super Lash. It's only $4 something at Walmart for a two-pack and I LOVE it :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. i love Covergirl's lash blash volume (orange tube), but for special occasions, i bust out my birchbox sample of benefit's they're real. it works wonders.

stopping by the camp is my favorite afternoon work break - love reading about your cute family! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love Almay's Get Up and Grow and L'oreal voluminous is great too!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Swear by cover girl lash blast (orange tube, NOT waterproof). It's been my one true love for like, six years.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I just saw the link to this in today's post and thank goodness! I have been seeking a new mascara for over a year since L'Oreal stopped making my favorite. I'll try some of these.
