Mary Gets Married

05 May 2013

Cellular Phone Picture Edition.

Mary is: Simon's sister, my sister-in-law, Julia's godmother, the kid's aunt, and thee best. She's the sweetest girl you'll ever meet (truly! she is) and she got married to lucky man Andrew on Friday night. We drove to Wichita on Thursday just in time for me to get my nails done with the girlz and the kids to go down for naps (both equally awesome). My mom was going to come up and help watch the kids but threw her back out right before she came so poor Meg and Mollie intercepted some frantic "do you know of any sitters?!" emails from the Interstate because our kids + fancy dinners = no. We found someone for both nights ... the first night the girl was pretty young and didn't have a cellie so I left her with Simon's so I could hover-text - we later saw that she had Googled "funny pictures" while the kids were sleeping - too cute. If I were left with a phone in my babysitting days I would be Googling, "will the parents notice I just ate all the fruit roll-ups, fruit by the foots, fruit snacks, and remaining expired Halloween candy? - please say no." Anyway -- I took a few pictures and am going to subject you to virtually all of them because I'm in a generous mood. I'm sorry.

Nana Bettina at Grandma Ann's house. Theo is wearing 1/2 of his rehearsal dinner outfit and whats remaining of his hairs.

Day of the wedding. Mary did ALL of her own flowers. I know! Maid's bouquets, flower girl bouquets, her OWN bouquet, the arrangements at the church and the reception, and she wasn't stressed or zilla-esque about the whole thing at all. She's my idol.

Before the wedding. Bash's face is a perfectly accurate foreshadowing of his wedding behavior. He saw me, Julia, and Simon come down the aisle and lost it. My poor dad walked him around the block multiple times in between trying to bring him inside only to have to wrestle him through yet another tantrum and claims he will be having t-shirts made saying, "I got Bashed".

Next time Julia is being a nasty nelly I'm going to throw her into her flower girl attire because she transformed into a sweet little lady as soon as she was all dressed up. It was like the "wear a suit and tie for a phone interview" thing - clothes make the man or whatever. She was weirdly WEIRDLY pleasant and polite and normal. I'm still reeling.

a. "Bash is getting some peace!" - Julia
b. again, not so subtle foreshadowing of his wedding behavior.

Man and wife + wife's siblings + Grace and the kids. Simon is the oldest and shortest Patton brother.

You know these peoples. I wish I would've gotten a shot of the back of my hair - Simon's cousin Jenna did all the girls hair and did a stellar job AND it didn't fall out during dancing (dancing where Simon threw serious salt in my game and claimed I'm an angry looking dancer ... at least I got one Thrift Shop jig in before I retired my dancing heels forever - I hope Salt Shaker's happy).

Isn't Mary's dress gorgeous? She looked like a princess. The most gorgeous princess in all of the land.

I'll be honest and admit that I was up for about two hours the night before the wedding worrying about all the logistics with the kids (what would they do during pictures? how would we get them to the sitter after the wedding but before the pictures at the reception RIGHT after the wedding? What if Julia freaks when I go up for the vows?) because I need professional help and the wedding was all about me and my brood, of course. It all turned out so much better than I could've imagined and it was the perfect day and night. Perfect. The weather reports were looking TERRIBLE the week before the wedding but it all turned out so lovely.

Oh! And to top it ALL off I got to meet longtime blog friend Kate (I think she was the very first non-family member to ever comment on the blog and she pretty much made my life) and her son Jake and she is thee cutest pregnant lady and I wish we could've talked for hours. If I'm forced to fly to California to chat in person again - I'll do it. I will. She was wearing the coolest cowgirl boots ever and why did I not get a picture? Things that will plague me forever.

ANYWAY ...

Congratulations Mary + Andrew!!
Welcome to the married club - the best of all the rest.
Enjoy your moon in Mexico!!

  1. "I Got Bashed"- I'd wear that shirt. You looked beautiful! (And yes, the bride did look like a princess!)

  6. "I got Bashed" is the funniest thing ever.
Those bridesmaids dresses were amazing! I love when the bride picks something that you actually might be able to wear again (I totally didn't).
And Mary is stunning, so so beautiful.
I'm so glad it all went well! I am taking notes for having 3 at a fam wedding this summer...

  7. Adore the bridesmaid dresses.

And next time you're in the ICT in a babysitting pinch, please know they'd be welcome at our place (that sounds a little creepy, but I mean it sincerely).

  8. My little sister once referred to Mary as "the Kate Middleton of Wichita," and I think that's just about accurate. That makes Elizabeth Pippa Middleton (also accurate!) and makes you the hot woman that the brother married. All good. My analogy runs out of Middleton family members after that and thus does not extend to Andrew and Paul. I'm sure they won't mind. :)

You looked gorgeous, Grace, and your little Julia was a darling grinning hostess at the farewell thing the next day :)

  9. Not ashamed to say that when I saw you posted this I said, "Yes!!" Chris thought something personally monumental to me had happened, but nope...just wedding photos from the Pattons. Roadtrip boredom + wedding obsessed = weird new low. Laughed out loud when I saw Bash's blessing himself but flipping off others pic. The wedding looked beautiful, Julia adorable, the bride stunning, and you looked gorgeous! Her taste in bridesmaid dresses is wonderful!! So classic yet original if that makes any sense.

I'm going to be worrying about kid logistics next year for my brother's wedding. If Ryan doesn't grow up between now and then, it's going to be pretty ugly.

And Ryant just threw all of the craisins out of the container during this short blog reading vacation. Don't think he is going to grow up...

  10. Everyone looks gorgeous, and yes, it is amazing what putting them in those flower girl dresses does to them.

Doing your own flowers that morning, if you don't have a tone of wiring to do, is totally feasible, and saves you soooo much money. And if you have available fridge space, you can do all the corsages and men's flowers the day before too. I did all mine, except the church flowers (we got married in the Christmas season so it was already decorated) and it really kept me from fretting myself silly beforehand.

  11. Jude could design, print, and sell the "I got Bashed" shirt from his store... just saying.

  12. The shirt idea is true genius.

That wedding party is the most gorgeous- every last one of y'all.

Hair! I want an excuse for an updo!

Will be dressing Cecilia in flower girl dresses from now on.

  13. Great pictures! Glad it all went well. I love your dress - especially the sleeves. So many dresses are strapless or one-shoulder, and I love the classic look of actual sleeves.

  14. I always stress (usually unnecessarily) about logistics w/ the kids- glad everything worked out for you guys. It looks like it was a beautiful wedding/weekend!

And I refuse to believe you'll actually retire your dancing shoes, salt or no salt.

  15. Grace, I love your dress! Where is it from?

  16. Just curious why a Friday night wedding? My wedding attending days are gone so am I missing the latest trend?

    1. I thought the same thing 2 years ago when EVERY wedding to which we were invited was on a Friday afternoon/evening. I suppose it's gaining popularity for at least 2 reasons: 1, it's easier to book on short notice (many of my Christian friends had very short engagements; finding a venue in the prime of wedding season was difficult to do in a few months), and 2, although I can't say for sure, I believe the cost for the venue is less expensive than a typical Saturday or Sunday wedding.
I'd say it's not a trend you should be sad to miss. I'm all about Saturday morning weddings so I can be home ready for bed by 9pm! :)

    2. I c ain't speak for Simon's sister's reasons, but know this much: Catholics don't get married on Sundays. I don't think the reason is theological, but practical. We have Masses all day and evening, so there's no time to have a wedding in the church. And many parishes don't allow Saturday evening weddings because it interferes with the parish's vigil Mass. So for many Catholic brides and grooms who want an evening wedding, Friday evening is the only option.

    3. Um...*can't* not c ain't. Grrrrr...

    4. Me again! I should clarify that Catholics GENERALLY don't get married on Sundays for practical/logistical reasons. I'm sure there are some parishes that will work weddings in.

  17. ALL the dresses were gorgeous! I love the lace bridesmaids dresses especially. I kept thinking about the weird Kansas weather and the wedding all day Friday (which doesn't sound creeper at all right?). I'm so glad it turned nice. Congrats to all the Pattons!

  18. You and Julia are fighting it out with the bride over prettiest girl in the room. I call it a three-way tie.

  19. Ooooh, I LOVE the bridesmaid dresses! Any chance you'd be willing to share where they're from? I'm getting married in September and am having a hard time finding light pink/blush bridesmaid dresses that are cute, classy, modest, and potentially rewearable.

  20. Your dress is so pretty! Also, I'm very impressed with the flowers that the bride herself had put together. Looks like a wonderful wedding.

  21. Can't believe she did her own flowers! She is amazing!

Also, I see that several people have asked about the bridesmaid's dress so sorry for the repeat ask, but in case you are answering to their emails (which: LOVE.), I thought I would add mine to the chorus of voices. I'm due to be a bridesmaid in July and we have no dresses (although the bride doesn't have hers either, so... I feel like we've maybe got some time?).

  22. Your sister-inlaw's wedding looks like it turned out absolutely perfect! Your daughter looks so pretty! I love the bridesmaid dresses. :)

  25. A few things:

    1. You looked GORGEOUS!!

    2. I got Bashed... loved it.

    3. Julia looks like such a sweetheart. Is it just the flower girl dress or would any dress work?

  26. I love this post! I'm having wedding withdrawals right about now, and am so bummed to be back at work!! Missing everyone so much!

  33. What a beautiful wedding! We will be doing the flowers for my wedding in August ourselves and I'm a little nervous about how it will go (only I will have help from family/friends), but seeing her lovely bouquets is giving me hope that it can be done! Your entire family is just too cute.
