fine/limp/flat hair help

(recycled picture: confessions of a resourceful/cheaty blogger)

Rather than subject you to every single dingle deet of our trip back from New Orleans (it'll come out eventually, you know me) I thought I'd deviate from my usual non-vapidy post topics and tell you all about my hair. It's called expanding my horizons and I'm seizing the moment here. I can see those eye rolls and they are ugly. Thank you.

1. Kirkland Signature Professional Salon Formula Moisture Shampoo: I try to switch it up but right now - this is working just fine. The only shampoo I've ever hated was that Moroccan oil shampoo in the blue bottle - that and my hair hated each other. Hated.

2. Kirkland Signature Professional Salon Formula Moisture Conditioner 33.8 Ounce Bottle: Costco, again. I'm sure everyone knows to shampoo your roots and condition your tips (well from my neck down) - works for me, unless I forget to rinse the shampoo which I do more than I care to admit.

3. Tresemme Keratin Smooth Infusing Serum: I picked this up at Target this winter when my hair looked like a broom stick stuck in a socket - static central. I just put a few pumps onto the bottom half of the hair before I blow dry. Love it.

4. Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing and Texturizing Powder: I've linked to this SO many times but I love it. I sprinkle a little on 1/2 way through blow drying. The best.

5. Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Dryer: Nothing special. This thing is on it's last leg after 5 years. I know there are super fancy dryers out there - I guess I don't know what I'm missing. I thought it was super quiet when I first bought it but I'm sure there are new ones on the market that make mine sound like you're standing next to an airplane propeller.

6. Conair Round Brush: I use this to blow dry my hair - the comfort grip has been gnawed off in a joint effort by Bash and J.

7. Redken Thermal Setting Mist: Kelly Jo told me about this and I'm so glad I heeded her advice and purchased. It works wonders to help my (sad!) hair hold some curl. I spray it on each piece before I curl it. It sounds more labor intensive than it is.

8. Remington Pearl Ceramic Curling Wand 1 Inch - 1.5 Inch: Just like the dryer - I know there are nicer brands/models on the market but this has been working fine for well over a year.

I recorded the most rambly mumbly dummy "tutorial" (yes, in quotes) for you. It won't help a soul but I spent an embarrassing amount of time recording and rerecording after deleting clips and trying to placate a needy Theo.

I know I'm not an expert. I have thee flattest, most volumeless, limp hair in the world and this sort of works for me. I go a few days between washes and just re-curl a few pieces if I'm going to venture out into a public setting if I don't pull it back into a bunny tail or horse braid which I do quite often.

If you have any hair help recommendations -- I'll take them and run. I love a good hair miracle worker or nine because I'm low maintenance like that.

  1. Always have loved your hair! Maybe I should be attempting more products like above?? I'm a lazy, lazy woman. Oh...and I'm the Queen of that kind of cheaty, resourceful bloggers...

  2. I've been reading your blog for awhile now just never commented :) I just recently bought Got2b's version of the volumizing powder and I love it! It's less than $4 at walmart or anywhere else really. I think I beat you with the title of "thee flattest, most volumeless, limp hair in the world" though!!

  3. As someone with frizzy, curly hair - I envy your fine and limp hair! I ALWAYS have to do something to my hair - I can never just get up and go without mega flyaways and medusa looking curls. I do have the option to straighten my hair but lets face it, that just takes too much time that I don't have so frizzy mess it is!

  4. Your hair is so pretty always... I can't do the whole effortless bun/braid look because my hair is soooo Mia Thermopolis thick that it just look like a log sitting over my shoulder. So, I live vicariously through you.

  5. Question: How do you exercise and not wash your hair? I know it's bad to wash it every day, but I exercise every day and get sweaty like a pig and some days I even have to take 2 showers! Am I just sweatier than most (probably).

And I'd like to add that I've been taking Biotin for awhile now after the birth of Alexander, and it has seemed to help my hair regrow.

    1. Have you tried using a dry shampoo?? The fine mist spray at the roots + a little light blow-drying works great. I used it when marathon training, so I didn't have to wash my hair every day!

    2. I can't say I do much exercising, but I have to wash mine everyday too because in the morning it is usually oily and if I don't wash it, its pretty much stuck to my head which is so gross, so I just wash it every morning.

    3. dry shampoo! I let my hair air dry after working out, then once all the sweat has dried, I spray the dry shampoo on the roots. It actually has a lot more body, which I love! This only works when I don't straighten my hair. If my hair is straight and I work out, it just dries with weird bends/kinks from the sweat.

I love Pssssst dry shampoo. It's around $6 at CVS and Walmart.

  6. You know that saying 'the grass is always greener on the other side'? That's definitely the case with hair! I have really thick wavy/curly hair, which is really coarse, so I'd give a few fingers and toes to have your hair texture. Your hair always looks soft and shiny. Like your hair; I've spent so many hours straightening my hair to make it look anywhere near like yours does x

    1. mine too....coarse, thick, wavy-ish but mostly frizzy and poufy. I need a de-volumizer or something.

    2. Anne, rather than trying to knock the volume out of mine I just use this while my hair is wet. I don't mind volume so long as it has shape! Without this stuff my hair is just 'pouf' and kink. x

    1. Biotin! Get this vitamin supplement in the 5,000 mcg's and take two a day. Your hair will grow so dang fast and THICK. I've turned so many people on to it and they all declare their hair has never been as healthy. Be warned...girl you will grow hair fast and thick EVERYWHERE. Keep the tweezers and any other maintenance tools (ahem) handy. Good luck!

  9. Loved the tutorial! Theo is a cutie :). And I totally understand the having no channels thing. We don't even have a tv and JUST got rid of our Netflix.

Anyway, question about your hair - how long does it usually take you to do all this? My hair is super flat and I'd love to add some body (I do have layers so sometimes it'll naturally look slightly wavy, but usually, stick straight, same ol'), but most days, I seem to have less than no time to work on my hair. That and I'm uncoordinated. STILL haven't figured out how to hold a round brush and a hairdryer and use both at the same time.

  10. Thanks for this, Grace! I think #3 might be helpful for my hair...anything to help the frizz in the humid summers we get around here!

  11. Thanks! I'm going to give the curling wand a shot. I had long hair forever, but chopped it off last winter, because it looked drab. I miss the length for many reasons, and think I might be willing to grow it out again if these products will help me style it.

  12. I am going to go ahead and just say what everyone else was thinking when they watched that video, but didn't want to say because it might make them sound weird:

YOU ARE SO GORGEOUS!!! Tell us your secrets, woman! And not just about your hair. We want to know *everything* you do to look like that.

    1. I'm with Jen! That's what I was thinking too! I could follow your exact tutorial or even have you do my hair and I somehow don't think I'd create the same "effect" :)

I have thin hair... which used to be pretty thick... but then I became the baby factory that I am and now it's really thin... like I could probably curl it all in 8 strands. Does anyone know how to make thin hair look thick? Or actually become thicker?

  13. Wish I had your hair! Mine is think and course and frizzy. I used Frizz Ease heat protectant spray and that's been amazing. I lack volume, so maybe I'll give the volume powder you suggested a try :)

  14. I watched through your video in its entirety even though I have curly hair............Clearly I am there busiest of bees these days. Fear not, my face is in my palm too.

  15. i have no time for fancy hair these days... but had to comment to let you know Ryder gnawed the comfort grip off my conair brush, too. i think Ryder and J would make the cutest of dangerous couples.

  16. Hi Grace! You don't know it but in our house, we talk about you like you live next door. ("Grace says this" "Today Grace did that" No introduction needed when telling my husband a story about you guys anymore.) Last weekend, we went to St Louis for a high school friend's wedding (We loved it! Midwest cities are so much cleaner and nicer and less crowded than east coast ones...) and spent all our time in public places scanning the crowds for you. I'm really happy you got to go away for the weekend, but I was looking for you! It would have made my whole life to run into you at the mall or up in the arch or something.

    1. oh, so funny! What are the odds that we'd be gone since generally we are ALWAYS here? I'm glad you liked it! I need to learn to love it a little more -- next time let me know if you come into town!!

    2. too funny- we were in STL for a wedding last weekend (first opportunity to dance to Thriftshop in public) as well and I thought the same thing! But, I thought I would need to stop by COSTCO to run into you. Also- I agree with Cindy's comment regarding the Got2B version of the powder. I love it and it's cheap!

  18. I just watched Nashville after reading this, and I thought huh! Grace has Connie Britton/Tammy Taylor/Rayna James hair. Or vice versa :)

  19. HOLD THE PHONE. You put the Powder Play in halfway through the drying process? Brilliant. I've commented before that since you recommended that stuff I refuse to be without it.

Costco shampoo and conditioner is hands down the best stuff ever. Except Pureology which I believe is the exact same formula but sold at ridiculous prices at ridiculous salons. Pfffft.

  20. OMG YOUR VIDEO. You crack me up. And sound a lot different than what I had in my mind. In my mind, you had a high pitched voice, and in the video you sound normal. Is that an insult? I hope not.

Anyway, I do love your hair and your video was not pointless (FYI it was a nice video to watch while I painted my nails). I do have a question though- do you wash your hair at night or in the morning? I wish I could wash my hair in the morning and blow dry, but since it's only possible to wash hair when both kids are sleeping, it has to be nighttime, and then I don't want to blow dry my hair because my hair dryer, while super powerful and awesome, is REALLY loud. So I just wash it at night and then air dry it until I go to bed, and then in the morning I curl it, but then it doesn't have as much volume. WELL I just came up with a solution while typing this comment, that I should just go to bed with wet hair and then wake up and blow dry it in the morning. DUH.

And.... as someone who has always had thick and LOTS of hair, and has spent the majority of my life avoiding volumizing products like crazy, I'm finally at the point where my post-partum and growing-old hair loss is making me start to search for products that will help my limp and lifeless hair. So any volumizing/un-limping hair tips are welcome.

  21. As a fine/limp/flat hair girl myself I had the same reaction to the Moroccan oil shampoo, it left my hair with a kind of "weirdness" I cannot explain. I already have a trip to Target planned for after work today, so this post was a perfect excuse to add a few more things to my shopping list.

  22. Your hair is amazing. Still so thick after three kids...jeal.
Also, you gave me a boost of confidence over the video tutorial I am supposed to do for Jose Eber this week that is making me so nervous.
    You rock,
    Anna

  24. I love this! Just what I need to try something different with my totally limp hair. I have to agree with the Youtube commenter that you can give credit where credit is due...both your blog and your hair are great!

  25. I don't normally go out and buy something just because a blogger said it was a good product, but I thought I would tell you that I ordered the "hair wand," and it should be here this week. I'm mentally preparing myself for some sweet 2nd degree burns, but I think it's going to be much easier to use than a curling iron--which has not been my friend throughout the years.

Thanks for the tutorial--it really did help.
