What I Wore Sunday: Mom in Black

03 March 2013

Black and brown and tan - the rainbow's all here.

Also, file these photos under, "put the black maternity swimsuit coverup downstairs in storage before Grace throws it on in March and wears it to church."

While we were all still in our sleeping clothes at 10:30 we decided that we would go to an 11:00 Mass that was about 10 minutes away. It might've been one of our prouder moments as parents when we slid into our parking spot three minutes early and walked in only one whole minute late. We'd never been to this particular parish before and I would imagine we might not be returning anytime soon. The kids were on weirdly good behavior (Julia was quite taken with a dried out baby wipe and Sebastian with the 20-something girl with the pretty singing voice) but they were the youngest in attendance by far. The lady behind us scolded Julia for taking one (1!) receipt out of my purse, practically jumped over the pew to help us pick up the scattered piece of paper (singular) before the priest had finished the final blessing, and tattled on Sebastian to Simon twice for dropping his bottle. Simon told her (from the safety of the van) that we'd left many churches unscathed in the past and I added that I was going to blog about her, oh yes I was. Who's last laughing now, crazy? After her entire display of allupinourbiz I actually welcomed the requisite, "you've got your hands full!" by the smiley 70 year old man as we were walking out and I swore that we'd never stray from our beloved hospital chapel Mass again.

We're starting to feel more like ourselves again after a couple nights of sleep. I think I might get reacquainted with the Crockpot as I dip my toes back into meal prep after too many weeks off the clock. And I think I'll reorganize my closet because I know I can do better than that mess of maternity +  tights with a gaping hole in the back of the knee that I thought were okay to rock to church.

the coldest mess:
Jacket - Urban Outfitters
swimsuit coverup - Target
Boots - Forever trying to be XXI

Mass Behavior:
Julia: A+ (because the look on her face after the stranger scolding about killed me and she kept her shoes and sunglasses on the entire time)
Sebastian: A- (because he only bucked like a Bronco 1.5 times)
Theodore: A- (because he did require a little bit of attention which is an unwelcome change from his usual statue behavior)

Linking up with FLAP. You should do the same!

  3. Grace, how do you feel about taking the kids into the hospital so often? I'll totally eat off the floor at home, but I'm paranoid when it comes to hospital germs, especially with so many resistant strains out there. But maybe a little exposure here and there will build some super duper immunity? I'm on the fence about this.

    1. that's a good question that I've never asked myself. Hmmm .. I don't think twice about it because I'm just so happy they get to see Simon and that we are able to meet him as much as we do. I'll go with super duper immunity and keep my appendages crossed!

    2. And. I'm certain Simon scrubs himself in bleach before he comes home, right? ;)

    3. This was a constant inner struggle for me too as we like to go visit Daddy, but I was paranoid about the germs. Then I figured that since he goes to daycare 5 days a week and has perma-snotty nose, it's best to avoid to protect the patients from HIS germs. As long as you aren't on the actual patient floors, I'm sure it is fine. Time with Daddy is worth some extra hand washing I think.

      Good luck!

    4. Can I just add that my sister (Elizabeth, who asked the question above) brought my Girl 1 to visit me in the hospital when my Girl 2 was born. Elizabeth dressed herself and Girl 1 in rubber boots (it wasn't raining), as they are easier to disinfect than other shoes. She (successfully!) struggled for composure when Girl 1 promptly kicked off the boots and ran around in socks. My sweet sister later scrubbed the inside lining of Girl 1's boots to take care of the germs that were transferred from the socks when the boots went back on. . . . Love you Lizzie! ;-*

    5. Ha! Forgot about that story. Love to both my sisters. :)

    6. At least labor & delivery cares for mostly well patients. Besides, think of all the gross things floating around places like Wal Mart.

  4. Oh no she didn't!!
Glad Julia gave her a look, and you all are feeling better after some sleep.

    1. LOL, I totally thought "Oh no, she didn't" too. It makes a funny story for later! Love your stylish jacket and boots, Grace!

  5. So fun to read about your adventures in baby-raising and church-going. We're a family with three kids (9, 6, and 4) and I'm growing baby #4 as I type so we'll be back to the baby at church stage soon. In our years of taking many little people to churches, we've had loads of people say, "Oh. Did you know we have a nursery?" Silly us, wanting to worship with our kids. Anyway, thanks for sharing your many tales with us.

    1. Also, I used to take the "Did you know we have a nursery?" as in insult, but now I try to interpret it as, "I'm trying to be helpful, you must not realize we have a nursery and maybe you actually want to use it!"

  6. Grumpy cat lady clearly had no idea who she was messing with. You go, girl. And what better outfit to glare back in?

  7. thanks for the laugh! Glad the kids were all well behaved since the surrounding adults were not.

Maybe your kids were just what that little old lady needed - sometimes they don't realize how gruff they come off!

You still look cute, despite the outfit description - I thought the hole was just something wrong with the camera lens :)

  9. oiy vey.
whenever I have multiple small children in front of me in mass, it makes my week.
especially this little boy who makes a pterodactyl noise that turns heads. true story.
I can't imagine how hard it would be to be charitable to peeps like that. ugh.

and maybe, just maybe, if you had cigarettes accessories to go with that outfit, crazy lady would have left your kids alone...just a thought...

  10. LOL! You crack me up with your description of your fellow Mass goers. I would love to see Miss Julia in her shoes and sunglasses. Too funny. As for the black...it covers all sins. Have a great day!!

  11. Good thing that lady wasn't sitting behind us..John slapped the whole container of cheerios out of the hub's hands and they spilled everywhere. The kind lady next to use smiled and just handed us a pre-wrapped cookie. The best part was finding the "please do not litter in the pews" announcement in the bulletin.

  12. I have to admit I wasn't able to sympathize with you on people telling you you have your hands full, but the other night we went to the mall to run the kids around and this old lady kept staring at us and then completely stopped us on our way out to tell us we have our hands full. Yes thank you, I am aware of how many kids I have and how close in age they are! People just can't help themselves I guess.

  13. There must be something in the apple juice today because my kids were weirdly well behaved as well. Even thought it was a special meeting that left us sitting in hard metal seats for 2 hours with no snacks. Miracles afoot?

You look amazing in that jacket. You rock the edgy look well!

  14. Great job on behavior. I wish people would only comment on kids behavior from the privacy of their own vehicles. I am aware of my failings of being a parent and dont need to hear about your children never did such things. Poor tykes.

  15. Does it even need to be said? I love the jacket. Love.

  16. You go, Julia! That lady doesn't know who she was dealing with.

  17. Love your outfit, you look super cute! So funny because today some old lady was corrected my Isaiah and it errked me to no end. I said to myself and with my eyes, "seriously, he is not doing anything wrong and I am right here to correct if he was!"

  18. I just recently started reading your blog (found through the WIWS link-up). You make me laugh out loud, and your kids are adorable! Love the jacket!

  19. Can you start teaching Julia some witty comebacks? How would that old lady feel if Julia piped up with, "Can it, Mass police."?

  20. I think our girls are kindred spirits. LK has worn her sunglasses to church every Sunday this month. My mom said this morning that I should get her some glasses to wear instead....thanks mom.
Love reading about your sweet family and you look great!

    Love love love the jacket!

  23. Grace, tonight at Church, to my embarrassment, Ben (nearly 3) and I, got scolded by the Priest. The actual PRIEST! Before mass the priest walked by our pew and I wanted Ben to say hi to him. The priest walked right over to our pew, said hi to Ben, and then scolded me for allowing him to have gum in church. It keeps him quiet! is what I was thinking. Then as I took it out of Ben's mouth, the priest tapped me on the shoulder and told me to make sure I didn't stick it under the pew. WHAT?!?!?! Such an odd encounter. So I wonder how this priest feels about sippy cups and little snacks in church for toddlers?

  24. Lemme at that lady! What the....

    I can't even.

Look at you in your hotness with your kids of loveliness and that b-word had to go and be such a friggin' b-word. What is wrong with people? What if you had been estranged from the Church and were just coming back to try it out again and WHAM! Attack of the harpy!

    Ugh.

    Anyway. You're still hot.

    1. Totally agree with 1) the hotness and 2) not understanding what the heck is wrong with people sometimes. I remember this did happen to me once --- was just starting to come to mass, whispered something to my friend because I was trying to figure out what was going on and I was heartily SHUSHED by a woman beside us. I wasn't even that loud, but I'll always remember her rude reaction!

  25. Chronic picker-uppers are my mass nuisances. I know they mean well, but the baby is just going to drop it again if I pick it up now, so let's just wait until the end! (My 13-month-old is a translation-card hoarder. She had 5 in her hands at one point at last night's vigil.) Ah, old ladies...what can ya do?

  26. Oh, boy, your mass "helper." Bleh.

You look pretty, you are effortlessly stylish, and I did not see the hole.

I ventured into Forever 21 for the first time this week, and they don't have those boots in my size. So I got a bracelet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've been wanting a 'leather' jacket and you just made me want one more. Those boots are perfecto too!

The crockpot is my best friend; I don't think Stephen and I would eat dinner without it (and I don't even have the excuse of having three kiddos).

  28. I noticed that hole!! Hate "helpful" people. It's like they have never seen/heard small children before.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Old ladies... gotta love them.

The crockpot is my saving grace during tax season for dinners. I wish I could make everything in there.

  30. That Mass! Mercy. At least you looked fabulous--I love those boots, especially paired with black!

  32. 20 something with an awesome voice? Sounds like who our family calls " The Disney Princess" I really hope you didn't get turned off of our church... We go to HR in Webster. IF you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it! We tend to be a pretty child friendly parish.

    1. ha. perfect name for "her" -- no it wasn't HR - I've been there and liked it a lot!

We should try again the next time Simon has a Sunday off

  33. I laughed out loud when I read your post! I also wore my black maternity swimsuit coverup to mass this weekend. Old Navy though. Cute boots and a jacket hide many things. :)
