14 January 2013

I wasn't going to post at all today for a multitude of reasons (Theo won't stop nursing, Theo won't stop nursing, Theo won't stop nursing*, Sebastian emptied the super full trash thrice in a row, and I was scared you might be able to see my good hair/face/clothing day through the screen and feel inferior) but then I checked my email and had some questions from a kind reader by the name of Stacey so I thought I'd just answer and post them here. And if you'd like to call me lazy I will happily ship Theo and his Goliathesque appetite over to your house for a slumber party. I'll do it. Don't test me.

Here we go ...

Why haven't you put up Theo's birth story yet?
Because it was such a traumatic and emotionally scarring experience that I can't bring myself to think about it for long enough to type it out.

Not.

It's actually not all that exciting and I've been using my 3 hour chunks of free time to do more exciting things like orchestrating complicated dance routines for the kids to this unpopular song, taking cellular phone picture montages of the sweet kittens ...

 intrigue

brothers from the same mother (they both got my toothy grin)

 d-d-d-d-done.

and debating whether or not I should stand up and walk to the bathroom to retrieve the nail clipper to cut my fingernails or just grow them out which actually transitions beautifully into ...

Why do you always cut Julia's hair? Mullet's are in for toddlers.
Are they? I'm so out of the hair trend loop. Fine ---- no more spur of the moment chops  "just to even out the rat tails!!"

Mullet nation .... hear her roar.

What are you favorite toys for the kids? (My niece's birthday is coming up and I need ideas! She's turning two!)
I've typed about this trumpet before. It's loud but the kids love it so much that I don't mind. If she's anything like Julia she'll love a tube of cheap chapstick to put on her "mips" and some Dora underwear (that she won't wear but will happily tote around and bust out only in the most public of places). Also, both kids are obsessed with this book they got for Christmas.

Will you really post the story of Simace?
Absolutely.

Does it feel weird that random people know random things about your family via internet?
No. Mostly because there are a zillion bigger blogs with a zillion more readers than the Camp will ever see. And I think I keep things pretty surface level around here. If ever I start posting about that fight Simon and I had over that really petty thing that I was absolutely RIGHT and he was absolutely WRONG about ... well then ... maybe I might feel weird. But since I mostly just type about impersonal subjects like breastfeeding, diaper contents, and our sex life ... I don't feel weird at all.

... and do YOU have a question? send it on over.

*and yet he's gained zero weight and lost one ounce since birth according to today's weigh-in. A conundrum for the masses to ponder ...

  1. Lost an ounce?!? - How.Is.That.Even.Possible. Kid has been eating non-stop...from what I hear.

  2. Um, not lazy. I'm lucky if I post twice a week and baby #2 isn't even here. How do I squander all my time? Certainly nothing productive. Maybe more kids = more blog fodder?

  3. Scared to click on the sex life link. Probably will anyway, after clicking the youtube link.

  4. I suspect he isn't latching properly, if he nurses all the time and isn't gaining weight. That would also explain the pain and engorgement issues you experienced.

    1. Completeky agree especially as you have reported painful nipples. Tongue and lip tie check! Oh and not to sound too hippy, chiro and/or cranial adjustment. Seriously worked on Hannabert.

  5. I just always wish we were neighbors, we would have so much nursing and sitting and nursing and talking and nursing and drinking wine to do together.

Also, those pictures of Sebastian holding Theo might just be my favorite ever.

  6. One cute set of brothers there.

I would look into latch problems and tongue tie if I was you. Mr Theo has been nursing an awful lot from your enormous supply, to not have gained any weight is a little unusual.

  7. I wanna hear the birth story!! ;)

  8. soooo glad I clicked the sex life link. that one gave me a chuckle. Does your hospital give free follow-up breast feeding appointments? It could be a latch issue. Or call a Le Leche League leader in the area?

  9. I can't believe that anyone would call you lazy, and if they do then I most certainly will want to kick them since I will be close to being in your shoes (except my husband isn't nearly as busy) once this 3rd child too soon makes his debut! I can't imagine what it is going to be like but I have pretty good guess that there won't be much time for blogging between nursing and changing diapers and breaking up fights and making the older two take a nap every day to keep my sanity!

  10. http://theleakyboob.com/2011/08/baby-explains-normal-newborn-behavior/

i read this a couple weeks ago and filed it away in my brain for this summer when i am camped out on the couch with a new babe. but i agree with the other commenters that you might want to check with a good lactation consultant to make sure there aren't any other issues impeding all the hard work you both are doing.

    1. thanks mary!! I tried to go in to see an LC and they said to just "keep pumping" .... maybe I should've been more insistent .... if he keeps this up I'll definitely just show up. They'll love me.

    2. Bummer about the LC's. Have you tried La Leche League? Their website is really helpful too and they should have a group in your area. Mom's who double pump with a hospital grade pump typically see a 30% increase in supply, if you think supply is an issue :-)http://www.llli.org/web/missouri.html

  13. The picture montage cracked me up. And coming from a mom of 4 babies in four year who have now grown into teens, be ready for the questions and accusations Theo is going to throw at you when he sees these photos. Poor baby siblings. The poking and the dropping and the "patting".

    1. You are right my baby #2 can't forget the video she watched of her sister jumping over her in her crib. She brings it up at the strangest times. In my defence baby #1 was a baby too ( they are 19m apart). Better hide the proof of all dropping, patting, and eye poking before Theo is scared for life.

  14. Grace,

I heart you and your blog, and I don't know if you we're looking for "helpful" comments about nursing, or not, but here I go, anyway... To be only one ounce under your birth weight is great at two weeks old! If he's one ounce up from his lowest weight after birth, that's a little more worrisome (and may indicate a latch issue, as some of your other commenters have mentioned). So glad you are sharing with us even amidst your recovery and your other babes.

    1. you are on the same page as the pediatrician! he actually thought it was pretty good ... we'll keep an eye on him though!!

thanks so much for reading ... really means a lot!

  15. It may not be an issue at all- only that he has a fast metabolism. My kiddos have all been that way and they eat non- stop through infancy with nursing and toddler-hood with snacks. He will pork-up, it's just a matter of time. He's in a massive growth spurt faze and he's burnin through it all :) keep up the good work.

    1. thanks! the pediatrician wasn't concerned -- I was only surprised because the other two gained at least a pound by 2 weeks. I'll just enjoy that he isn't growing out of his clothes like a Basher QUITE yet ..

  16. Calling you lazy is all it takes for me to get my hands on your freaking-too-cute-I-just-wanna-cuddle-them children??!?! Well then you're lazy lazy lazyyyyyyyy

ship away. I'll be waiting impatiently at my doorstep.

  17. Time to trade in the boobs for some Enfamil :)

No, I would never encourage you to stop nursing, but I would be so so so frustrated if my baby wasn't gaining weight and I was nursing round the clock. I feel bad for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mine loves the boobs and is still under birth weight. They will catch up- feeding on demand is best for them anyway- makes for crazy sleepy mommys- but they are so worth it. :) you're doing great momma- and I think we can all wait for the birth story. Some things are more important and babies don't keep.

  19. Just the fact that you can string words together coherently is pretty impressive to me. I wish I had something constructive to say about nursing, but I don't. My son never latched no matter what I or any LCs did, so I exclusively pumped for him. Good times.

  20. Last night I was cooking dinner and my husband came home from work, and looking all serious he said, "I have a confession."

Putting the spoon down, I said "Ok...." shifty eye look "What is it?"

"I read Camp Patton while I was at work today."

  22. They told us our little man was under weight too and threatened that if he didnt improve we may need to supplement... blah blah blah (also the visit where they said he clenched his fists too much and may have had a brain stem stroke during delivery !!!!!!) Anyway-he is now Michelin man and was probably just going through a phase. But i'm sure you know that; just sending another e-fist pump. Mom to mom style ;)

  23. hahaha I'm listening to that "unpopular song" right now! (:

  24. Aww your blog is so funny! Thanks for sharing and lots of luck with the nursing. My first born was a chunky monkey of Basher proportions but my second was a little pixie and she nursed all the time. If that helps at all (which I am sure it doesn't just thought I would share. :)

  25. Ooooooh, I die over the pics of Bashy and Theo!! It is crazy how old he is getting and looking. I love the poking and picking of the mouth and nose, too. Very special. :)

Still dying to read the birrrrth story. It is prevalent to the preparation of me being a first time birther and mother. (guilt tripping much?)

  26. Oops no idea how my comment ended up on the other post. Anyhow. Went through all the same symptoms with my last (4th baby) 5 months ago. At one month he was only a couple oz over his birth weight. He was gaining but very slowly. I really tried to convince myself it was nothing and he'd catch up. He was nursing round the clock, urinating ok, pooping every so often. After he had his tongue clipped, it was an INSTANT improvement and difference! The pediatric ENT said he couldn't clip very much because the tie was very thick and there was a blood vessel there. Any more would have required an OR. Even now, Paul can't lift his tongue as high as my other kids but does nurse adequately and finally started gaining weight. Good luck, hopefully there's been improvement!

  27. Can I raise your ego by saying that you are Wonder Woman? I babysit my friends 2 boys ( 2.5 and 1.5, they also have number 3 on the way) and am ready for a hard drink after two hours. You children are happy, Julia seems super smart and you still have all your hair!
