loooong weekend

26 May 2012

indeed.

I can't seem to find the good attitude I tucked away for holiday weekends like this when Simon works lots and lots of hours. So, if you don't like baditudes ... click onward and upward.

Yes, we're just sitting around chewing our (fun!) cud
like any other normal day.

I am teaching the kids how to give genuine (quality) glares from the window in the general direction of neighboring Bar-B-Ques that might look at all enjoyable. I let Julia have a teeny bit more than her usual 1/8 cup of 'pow-fo' (coffee, obvi) this morning. And Sebastian's ninja hand control is making serious progress as I found not one but two Cheerios secretly tucked into my bra long after he'd gone down for his 18 minute nap this afternoon. So ... I guess I'm basically homeschooling the kids in the Fine Arts this weekend. My next lesson plan will include complaining in Latin while cross stitching, "optimism is for the birds" onto pretty pillows. e-Back pats are welcome and appreciated.

I'll leave you with this pictorial of their glare progress.
do you hear that clucking in the background?

That would be the approval of one proud mother hen.

Happy weekend, I guess.

  1. Stay inside. Pollen is off the charts. The only one who profits from weekends like this are allergy medicine companies.

  3. Sweet Grace, my heart goes out to you. I remember being stuck inside with a shrieky 2-year-old and his grumpy 8-mos-old brother. All I wanted to do was GO FOR A WALK, dammit, but could not FOR THE LIFE OF ME find one of the 2-year-old's shoes.

I was not very fond of my life at that point--kind of hated it, in fact, because it all seemed so silly & pathetic & claustrophobic & yeah. That 2-year-old is now going on 15 and his baby brother turns 13 in a week. What the heck? How'd that happen? I still haven't even found that shoe!

(Ha. Actually I did...eventually...in the garbage can.)

You get my point, though--the years fly by, but you could choke on a day. I think you need a mommy playdate! Get out of the house--go to Barnes & Noble or something. I realize my advice is contrary to Cari's but you're a big girl, aren't you. You can DISCERN.

  4. Stinks. I'm working this weekend which I HATE. It gets in the way of planning anything fun. Check your local town for some free activities?

  5. I'll bring B over. His glare is the stuff "bully" is made of. Toph's staring at bar prep course material forever so we won't be missed.

  8. So sorry Grace!! Wish we could successfully have you over and BBQ - we end up going to a local joint to order BBQ so that we feel part of the holiday.

  9. Hang in there lady. We kept the twins outside alllllllll day, and it still took forever for them to pass out. Did I mention I also spent the entire afternoon making sure the twins didn't drown themselves at the pool we were invading, while my husband got to drink all afternoon and I looked on soberly? I dearly wish you lived closer so that we could sit on the porch and lament our un-funness. Everyone has now passed out and I'm going to sit on this couch and eat cookies until I explode.

Also, See Bass's face in that last picture makes me want to drive to St. Louis just to squish his cheeks.

  10. I applaud your curriculum. Clearly, judging from the last picture, you have 2 prodigies on your hands... :-)

  11. You should hang on to those Cheerios in your bra. Given how hard your kids work you, you never know when the need for a quick burst of nutrition will overtake you! You are a superstar Grace for even going outside!

  12. Those glares will serve them well for YEARS to come! Who needs a party for a day when you can be a party pooper for a lifetime?! :) Hang in there!

  13. i hear you. my husband has been working ridiculously long days for a couple of weeks now, i'm about to peak at over-exhaustion. in fact, today has been deemed tv day. yes, tv day. hours upon hours of sprout/natgeo/disney/whatev. (remember all those things we said we'd never do as parents...?) anyways, you need to drag out that pool and slip in accompanied by a margarita. sebastian will watch julia.

  14. Ugh....I remember long holiday weekends when hubby was a police officer and the two big ones were the two little ones. Worst. Days. EVAH!

  15. You poor thing! Jeff works every other weekend and gets home at 5 sharp almost no matter what and that is kind of brutal sometimes.

  16. I just want to say that as a wife of a former resident (not a former wife of a resident...although there are a lot of those out there) it will get better I promise! You will always have to deal with call, but it helps when they are attendings! I look back now and think holy cow..that was awful! Expectation management was key to survival. On good days I would think how thankful I was that at least they were helping people in their hour of need rather than pad someone's bank account. On bad days I would stew and eat too much ice cream. Being the spouse of a physician is its own little vocation I guess. I am sure your sense of humor will get you through it!
