My friend Caitlin is coming to visit/co-parent with me this weekend and she made me promise (using a lot of capital letters and exclamation points in her emails) to read The Hunger Games before she got here so that we might discuss the heady literature. So while Sebastian was crying it out for 63 enjoyable minutes last night and Simon was sleeping three minutes into the joyful, I started reading Suzanne Collins' wildly popular book. I normally hate fantasy fiction but I hate to say and admit that I am totally and completely engrossed in the fantasy fiction that is Peeta and Katniss (those names will forever have me scratching my temple ... though).
So while the house is obviously immaculate and I am obviously dressed for the day in my elephant skin lycra, Julia is still throwing intermittent baba missing tantrums and Sebastian just wants me to look at him for 34 seconds -- I am reading and neglecting even my most basic motherly duties. I even accidentally microwaved and served two ice cubes to a confused Julia for her lunch instead of her usual nuggets while trying to multitask and just read! one! more! electronic! page!
So whoever said that stay at home moms have it easy -- bonbons and no responsibility style -- was totally right. Just until the end of this book.
Or are there more? I don't even want to know.
ps now these posts formerly known as: super confusing will all make perfect sense
I'm reading it over Spring Break and a group of girls in my class are going to the midnight premier! We M2's know how t get our crazy on!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I hate to be the one to tell you this, there are 3 and they are all neglect-everything-good. I think I read all 3 in 2 days, granted I have no children and a husband perfectly content with lean cuisine and play station. I agree, I hate those stupid names! Where do these authors come up with them?? Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI read the first one, and now am on a lent fiction withdrawal mode and will pick up after the 40 days of reading......Jesus stuff......
ReplyDeleteI did nothing but read until I had all 3 books finished. Of course, I really have nothing else to do but read these days. LOVED THEM!! I have a feeling the movies won't even begin to do them justice unfortunately. And I was shocked by the amount of social/political commentary was interlaced into the books (and I am pretty dense with it comes to book themes/symbolism).
ReplyDeleteI hate the name Katniss.
I read and loved all three of them last year. Do what I did and just leave little bowls of food out where the children can get to the them. Read on.
ReplyDeleteThis must be why I gave up reading! Because yes, when I read anything even moderately entertaining (good is not a requirement) there is nothing more important to me.
ReplyDelete2 pieces of ice in the microwave? Love it!
I totally get this. This is exactly why I don't read. All the time. I ask myself why I never read anymore only to read a really great book and then ban myself from reading for another few months/weeks. When I read, I READ. There's nothing like a good book.
ReplyDeleteI just finished The Hunger Games (first book of series) on Sunday and am about one or two chapters away from finishing the second book... Catching Fire. They are so good! I can't wait to finish reading it. There is a third book, I will be ordering very soon.
ReplyDeleteI also am a wonderful mama while engrossed in a book... which is why I haven't let myself read at all today. I made the kids muffins for breakfast just to make up for my stellar parenting Monday and Tuesday and let them eat three in a row.
I love these books! I read them last summer. Great mindless reading...
ReplyDeleteso obsessed with these books...I read the second two on my phone while weaning Joey/trying to convince him new baby had subverted his milk supply. I think the screaming only heightened the delish tension in the novels...
ReplyDeletei tried to get you to read this AGES AGO! it's SO GREAT!
ReplyDeleteI almost bought the first one at Sam's Club the other day. When I asked for book recs back in the fall it seemed like everyone said to read these.
ReplyDeleteI just might have to treat myself to it after I finish seeding the lawn this weekend, lol. I can enjoy it on the back deck while I watch the crabgrass die.
I am so glad to hear you approve.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't put it down. Last summer, Gabe, Maria, and I each took turns on one trilogy set and completed within a few weeks. Obviously there was parent neglect involved...
